Cycles of Matter and

Energy Transfer
7.LS2.1
Standard

 Develop a model to depict the cycling of matter, including

carbon and oxygen, including the flow of energy among
biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) parts of an
ecosystem.
Learning Intentions

 Cycling of matter constantly occurs between biotic and abiotic parts of an ecosystem.
 Photosynthesis and cellular respiration helps facilitate the exchange of oxygen and carbon.
 The carbon and oxygen cycle extend beyond gas exchange, including but not limited to
decomposition, use of fossil fuels, and geologic processes.
Biotic and Abiotic Factors

 Biotic- Prefix “Bio” mean living.

 Abiotic- Prefix “A” mean not. So “Abio”
would mean not living.

 How many items from nature can you place

in each category?
Carbon Cycle
 the process in which carbon atoms continually travel from the atmosphere to the Earth and
then back into the atmosphere.
Oxygen Cycle
 biogeochemical transitions of oxygen atoms in molecules through reactions within and
between the spheres/reservoirs of the planet Earth.
 The Water cycle of a part of the Oxygen cycle!
How are the Oxygen cycle and Carbon cycle
connected?
 Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration are components of both
cycles!
 Photosynthesis takes carbon dioxde out of the gases in the
atmosphere and replaces it with oxygen. Photosynthesis also
produces sugar which is made out of carbon molecules.
 Cellular respiration pulls oxygen from the atmosphere and replaces
it with Carbon Dioxide. Cellular respiration also breaks down food
(Sugars) to form water and carbon dioxide.
The Connection

 Both of these cycles are dependent on each other.

 They are connected through photosynthesis and cellular
respiration.
 They create a continuous cycle of matter and energy that
flows through ecosystems.
Other questions to consider…

 Which cycle are fossil fuels a part of?

 Does decomposition play a role in either of the cycles?
 Does each cycle have long-term and short-term storage portion?
 Would either cycle exist without the other?
 How do geologic processes affect the cycles?
 Where does the energy for each process come from?
 What role do human have in each of these processes?
