Teacher education intro
• Teacher education is a program which relates
to the proficiency and competence of teachers
which enable them to meet the requirements
of the profession.
• Goods dictionary of education says that it is
the collection of formal and non-formal
activities that enable the members of teaching
profession to discharge their professional
commitments

• From 1906-56 teacher education program was
known as teacher training.
• Later Kilpatric said that training is provided to
circus animals while education is for human
beings, now
• Teacher education=teaching skills+ pedagogy
theory+ Professional skills

Teaching skills
These include;
• Techniques, approaches, and strategies that
help develop lesson plans
• These include;
• Appropriate reinforcement
• Effective classroom management
• Use of instructional materials
• Effective use of communication techniques

Pedagogical theory
• It embraces philosophical, sociological and
psychological considerations towards teaching
skills
• These level and need specific (students &
societies)
• These help promote the characteristics of the
academic and students developmental stages

Professional skills
• These include techniques, strategies and
approaches that help the teachers grow
• It includes soft skills, counseling skills,
interpersonal skills, computer skills,
information retrieving skills, management
skills and life long learning skills
• Amalgamation creates right knowledge, skills
and holistic development

Nature of teacher education
• It is a continuous process
• Its pre-service and in-service components
complement each other
• It has three phases according to International
Encyclopedia of Teacher Education like pre-
service, induction and in-service teacher
education
• Teachers are made and they have to learn the
tricks of the trade.

• It includes adult education, non-formal education,
literacy and development activities of the society
• It is ever evolving and developing and keep abreast with
the latest developments
• It is a theoretical blending of cognate(similar) disciplines
• It is diverse at stages according to the needs of stage
• In-puts processes and out puts are interdependent in
teacher education programs

Need of teacher education
• Quality of nation is linked with quality of citizens,
quality of citizens depends upon quality of education,
quality of education depends upon the quality of
teachers.
• Every community needs quality teachers in the
classroom for which teacher education is to be;
– Of adequate length for the preparation of teachers
– Level of quality of content
– Based on variety of skills
– Higher level of commitment to teaching profession

– Sensitive to contemporary issues
• Exquisite level of motivation
• Capacitate teachers to educate all children
• Equip the students with beliefs, morals,
attitudes, values, commitments and personality
traits.
• Teachers may be equipped to use an array of
approaches to address temperaments, interests
and approaches to learning

• Teachers should be given role orientation to
teachers to reshape the attitudes of the
students
• Teacher should know psychology, philosophy,
sociology, and modern media materials for
best preparation
