Introduction:
Activated carbon is porous carbonaceous material with the
highly developed surface area are widely used in numerous
applications, including adsorption. The internal porosity &
related properties such as surface area, pore volume, pore
size, distribution & the presence of functional groups on pore
surfaces play a significant role in the adsorptive capacities
ofactivated carbon.
Surface Activation
 Surface activation can be defined similar to the other
methods used to alter the chemistry of surface introducing
chemical groups or charges on the surface or physical
changes created on the surface through etching, removing
impurities by ablation, roughening, wavy shapes, and
voids formation.
In Slide #3 we discussed the surfaces
area increases of activated carbon, for
this method we apply the Foxnut Method
for increase the surface area of carbon.
How do you increase the surface area of activated carbon?
Among them, potassium hydroxide (KOH), because of its better activation effect, has become a widely used activator since it can promote
the activated carbon to create a larger specific surface area and stronger adsorption performance.
How we increase the surface area of
charcol?
Charcoal, is a form of carbon processed to have
small, low-volume pores that increase the surface
area available for adsorption or chemical reactions.
Activated is sometimes substituted with active.
The surface areas of activated
carbons are usually measured using the
Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET)
method,6 which employs the nitrogen
adsorption at different pressures at the
temperature of liquid nitrogen (77 K).
In which method increases the surface
area as adsorption also increase?
According to this Theory Brunauer–Emmett–
Teller (BET) theory, increase the surface
area as adsorption increase. specific surface
area determined through BET theory may
depend on the adsorbate molecule utilized and
its adsorption cross section.
For Example:
Why the surface area of adsorbent
increase after adsorption?
Consider adsorption test of oil/water solution
using modified zeolite as adsorbent, the BET
analysis for the used adsorbent indicate there
is 30% increase in surface area.
