Body Position
My Keyboard is at
the edge of the table
I am a hand span
away from my
computer.
My body is centered
with the B and N
keys
Feet on the Floor

• My feet are on
the floor.
• My feet are
slightly apart.
• I feel balanced.

My fingers are
comfortably curved.
• My fingers are upright

and not leaning.

• My thumbs are resting
on the space bar.
My hands look like
“monkey fingers”
Fingers on HOME ROW
 My fingers are resting lightly on
the TIPS of Home Row keys.
 My index fingers are resting on F
and J.
 With each key stroke my fingers
quickly return to Home Row.

fingers to operate the
assigned keys
•Use a circular, pecking
motion (down and
inward)
Eyes on Copy
 My copy is in the right
place ( perhaps on a clip
board)
 My eyes are on my copy
or my monitor
 I never look down at my
keys
Wrists and Fingers

fingers resting lightly
on keys

of hands not resting on
the keyboard

keyboard or table.

motionless
How to be a good typist?
 There really is no "magic" or secret about good
typing ability.
 Takes time and lots and lots of practice!
 However there are some important things that will
help you in the process:
 Your goal at first should be to learn the
keys and HOME ROW before you begin
to build speed.
 Technique is most important!
Why are all of the keys mixed up?

 The reason for all the keys are mixed

up was to speed up typing while slowing
down the typist.

Christopher Latham Shole in 1872

 invented the machine called the "Type-
Writer"
Why are all of the keys mixed up?
 Sholes redesigned the layout of the
letters on the keyboard to force the
typist to slow down.
 We call his layout the "QWERTY"
keyboard (after the first six letters of
the typewriter's second row).
Home Keys
To begin typing, we should place their
fingers on the following keys, called the
home-row:
What is the keyboard’s official
name?
 "Qwerty"
 Named after the top row of letters
on the keyboard
 If you don't think so just look on
your keyboard!
 Invented - 1864
IF YOU DO THIS . . .

 You will keyboard faster.

 You will make fewer mistakes.
 You will be able to type longer without
getting as tired.
 It will be less likely that you will have
health problems with your hands and wrists.
IT IS WORTH THE
EFFORT!
