1. Introduction
Background
• Several truck or vehicle tracking systems have been developed to provide reliable security for
trucks and valuable goods. Some of the technologies are locking systems such as the steering

wheel lock, fuel and ignition disabling system, etc.

• Now a days with increased technology and having large number of advanced satellites as an
advantage, many GPS based tracking systems are developed. But most of them cost much on
their GPS tracking devices.

Background
• The rising cases of theft done on commodities carried on trucks and any other vehicles,
diversion of crude oil and petrol, change of road route by drivers of companies that import and
export items through sea ports have caused the use of more reliable security system in trucks
and storage facilities for valuable items.

• In the proposed system” the developing technologies have laid their positive effect having the
Arduino-Uno as the heart of the project making it simple and advanced.

2
2. Problem Statement

• In a land locked country like Ethiopia, most of import export commodities that sail along the
marine ship transportation are transported by large Trucks from and to the Djibouti port risking
theft during transportation(called “kisheba” in Amharic).

3
Continued…

• During the transportation time most of the commodities are exposed to medium scale theft by
thieves and some irresponsible truck drivers that steal some of the commodities they have
carried on the truck by parking on some hidden places.

4
3. Objectives

General objective
• To study, Design and implement general GPS & GSM based
tracking and monitoring system

• To improve the income of the truck owners or companies

responsible on commodity transportation using the truck.
Specific objectives
• To Determine or get the location coordinates of
the truck.

• To Determine or get the status of the container

door by using sensor.
5
4. Scope and Limitations

Scope:-
 Tracking trucks carrying containers transported to and from Djibouti port

 Designed to be used in an area having a network coverage of 2G (GSM)

 Works on an outdoor area that doesn’t have a barrier to the GPS Module

Limitations:-
Network is not expected to exist every where so, SMS can’t be sent even if some
thing bad happens.

Before the engine stops, the system has to alert the driver which is not included here.

6
5. Significance of the Project

• Increases income by monitoring the status of import, export goods in truck.

• Sends vehicle location so that we can take actions if necessary.

• Stops the vehicle when a very suspicious activity like door opening occurs.

• Enables students who use school bus to save their time.

• One can find his stolen car’s location, saved from deficit and anxiety.

7
6. Literature Review

• Lau proposed simple bus tracking system in UCSI University, Kuala Lumpur,
Malaysia which provides students with the location information of a bus within a
fixed route.

• In comparison from the bus tracking system done by Lau from Malaysia Our
project incorporates additional security functions like engine stop and distance
detection using ultrasonic sensor.

• Another related work to the proposed system in this project is done by Ravi
Prakash Vijay and his colleague's on the project titled” Vehicle Tracking System
Using GPS and GSM”.

• If it detects fire and or the owner wants the location, it provides with location
from Google map and the place name in LCD display.

• Compared to Ravi Prakash’s work , our project is more advanced and comprises
an ultra-sonic sensor to make the security system effective and used to solve a
problem in our country.

7. Methodology
Methods
A. SMS Initiated Tracking method
 The system responds to the user/owner while the owner of the car sends a text message to the
system.
 At The moment the message is received by the system, the GSM module sends the command
to the microcontroller .
 Micro controller takes the current/updated location from the GPS module .

B. Sensor Value Initiated Tracking

 The system is initiated by the ultrasonic sensor.

An ultrasonic sensor installed on the container, measures the distance by using the
ultrasonic wave and receives the wave reflected back from the target.

When the sensor detects the variation in distance, it will send the signal to the
microcontroller then SMS message will be sent to mobile.

13
8. Results and Discussion

A. Simulation Result(SMS initiated Tracking)

 The owner initiates the system by sending “track truck” message to the system.

 The GSM module sends the updated location of the truck.

 After all it waits for the next security command from the owner.

B. Simulation Result(Sensor value initiated Tracking)

 If the detected distance by the ultrasonic sensor is greater than the threshold value,
the system will send the alert message to the specified number of the owner.

 Then it waits for the response or the command from the owner to do some thing.

Hardware Result

Container door opened.

Initiating the system by sending “track truck” .

Security measure.

18
9. Conclusions and Recommendations

 This vehicle tracking and Security feature plays a major role in improving:-

I. The income of Truck owners.

II. The income of companies.
III. Import and Export revenue.

 So, implementing GPS,GSM Tracking System in to a Truck is not an unnecessary or luxury

thing to do.

19
Continued…

• It is suggested that for future work or research, a high gain microstrip patch antenna should be
used for the GPS module to work effectively.

• It is suggested that for future work, a WIFI-module is a good choice to replace the GSM
module and a good way to save cost. And also a good way to log a detailed information on a
website.

• And additionally, incorporating other useful sensors like speed sensor in to the system is
recommended.
