Abstract:
• We test the claims made for US patent 6237579 by Mr Somender
Singh i.e. “A combustion chamber design layout of grooves on the
squish band of an engine head to enhance turbulence in charge
prior to ignition & after ignition direct the flame front to cause
multi-point ignition in combustion cycle resulting in higher flame
velocities, complete clean combustion, better fuel economy with
lower emissions & smoother engine operation through entire
range” on a two stroke bajaj chetak engine.
• We test the engine performance for various width of the groove
over the squish band of the engine head.
• We study the effect of groove over engine head for its typical
engine performance and understand the possible causes of it.
Purpose of Project:

 As compression is applied, the air-fuel

mixture tends to get unstable and starts
to separate and condense causing erratic
and incomplete combustion.

 To avoid this the only possible method to

keep the mixture in a homogeneous state is by inducing turbulence

prior to ignition.

 One method known to cause turbulence are squish bands or squish

areas located in the combustion chambers which help retain the air-
fuel mixture.

 Squish band prevents total combustion, as fuel is trapped between

the squish band and hence are less volatile causing incomplete
combustion.
Solution : GROOVE THE SQUISH BAND.
Stock head
 It is a concept of forming grooves in the squish
area or flat areas of the combustion chamber.
 This induces turbulence and optimum multipoint
flame propagation after ignition.

Concept of Grooves :

 This concept of grooves was developed by Mr Somender Singh.

 He obtained a US patent no. 6237579 over this concept.

 These grooves or channels or passages form the shortest path or passage
from the spark plug location to the ends of the combustion chamber
through the squish band. These grooves or channels or passages squirt
the air-fuel charge trapped between the piston crown and the squish
band towards the centre scoop of the combustion chamber on the
upward stroke and allows the flame to reach the farthest end of the
cylinder during working stroke.

Advantages of grooves over existing design :

 The Groove has beneficial effects on the compression

stroke as well as the power stroke. On the compression stroke, the Groove
channels one last bit of air/fuel mixture towards the spark plug, maintaining

swirl until the spark provides ignition. On the power stroke, the Groove
provides a channel for hot gasses to jet towards the cylinder wall and rapidly
ignite mixture in the squish area. It also appears that the Groove can destroy
standing vortices in the squish areas as well.

 Quicker and complete clean burn combustion

 Lower operating temperature due to higher flame velocity.

 Enhanced torque and power through entire range resulting in better fuel
economy with lower emission.

 Smoother engine operation through the entire range enhancing engine life.
Objectives:

 Enhancing the performance of 2 stroke engine by grooving the squish

band.

 Varying the width of the groove to determine the optimum width.

 Determining the optimum number of grooves.

Project Status :

 The 2 stroke test rig has been repaired and calibrated.

 Currently determining the best method to machine the grooves over

the engine head.
