WHO AND WHAT IS MET OFFICE?
• Meteorology is the scientific study of the
atmosphere
• Most countries have developed a central
organization responsible for weather
forecasting known as Meteorological Office or
Met Office

• Weather forecasting is
the application of
science and technology
to predict the state of
the atmosphere for a
future time and a given
location.
• Satellites orbit the Earth
and constantly sending
back images of evolving
weather systems.

• In order for people to send
information around the
world, the information has
to be in a language
understood by everyone
around the world.
• The special symbols used
for weather forecasting is
known as the “Synoptic
Code”.
• Each symbol has their own
meaning as shown in the
table on the next slide
