CONSTRUCTION WASTE

• All countries today are facing problems due to ever increasing

waste. How ever ,it is evident that with the economic development
of the country , the amount of construction and development
activities will also increase.
• Subsequently , the construction industry has been found to be a
major generator of waste.

• The construction waste problem can be categorized into two groups.

They are :

• 1.Problems faced at project level.

• 2.Problems faced at national level.
1.PROBLEMS FACED AT PROJECT LEVEL

• The construction waste problem at project level is

important mainly due to its direct relationship with
the contractors profit.
• Studies have shown that percentages of site waste
generation were always well above the initial
recommended waste norms of the project.
• Experimental studies pointed out that the waste rate
as high as 20-30% of the weight of total materials at
site.
PROFIT LOSS DUE TO SITE WASTE

• To eliminate unnecessary delays and ensure smooth

progress of the projects, all the required construction
materials should be available whenever they are
required.
• Therefore whatever material is wasted must be
replaced without delay.
• The additional cost of repurchasing these materials
directly affects the contractor’s intended profit and
perhaps can result bankruptcy.
CAUSES OF SITE WASTE

• There are many factors that contribute to construction waste

generation at site.
• Waste may occur due to one or combination of many causes.
• Waste causes were categorized under Four major sources
such as:
• 1.Desigen
• 2.Operational
• 3.Matrial Handling
• 4.Procument
1.DUE TO DESIGEN

• Lack of coordination paid to dimensional coordination of

products.
• Changes done to design while construction is in progress.
• Designers inexperience in method and sequence of construction.
• Lack of attention paid to standardized sizes available on the
market.
• Designers unfamiliarity with alternate products.
• Complexity of detailing in the drawing.
• Lack of information in the drawings.
• Selection of low quality products.
2.DUE TO OPERATIONAL

• Errors by trades persons.

• Accident due to negligence
• Damages caused by subsequent trades to work done.
• Use of incorrect material thus requiring replacement.
• Required quantity unclear due to improper planning.
• Equipment malfunctioning.
• Inclement weather
3.DUE TO METERIAL HANDLING

• Damages while transporting

• Inappropriate storage leading to damage or
deterioration .
• Use what ever is closer to the working place.
• Unfriendly attitudes of project team and
laborers.
• Theft
4.DUE TO PROCUMENT

• Ordering errors
• Purchased products that may not comply with
specification.
• Lack of possibilities to order small quantities
CONSTRUCTION WASTE MANAGEMENT

• Construction Waste Management is an area of the Waste Management which

is focused on waste associated with construction including new buildings
sites, Homes, Renovations, and demolition of existing structures.

• Generally such waste will usually collected and land filled but in modern era
Construction waste management become more complex as people started to
address concern such as environmental worries.

• No longer is everything on a construction site destroyed for buried in a land

fill.

• The objectives of the construction waste management are to maximize

material recovery, minimize waste, and reduce total waste management cost.
DEVELOPMENT OF CONSTRUCTION WASTE
MANAGEMENT PLAN

• The primary objective of a Waste Management Plan is to initially

limit the amount of generated construction waste on a project.
• Therefore it is important that all sub contractors and material
suppliers to limit quantities of material and packages bringing to
the site.

• This Plan also should includes that each employee on the site to
be trained to identify
• 1.The Construction Waste to be Re-Used
• 2.Materials to be Re Cycled
BENIFITS
• Following are the benefits of good Waste
Mangement practice.
• Lower disposal costs
• Avoidance of waste transportation costs
• Greater reuse / recycling of materials on site,
saving on raw materials purchased
• Lower levels of material wastage
GOOD PRACTICE ON SITE
•Buying and Storing Materials
•Order the amount of materials you need as accurately as possible;
•Arrange for 'just in time' deliveries to reduce storage and material losses;
•Consider the source of materials (Is the company certified with
environmental standards? Quality materials and recycled materials may
prove cheaper).
•Consider the packaging used for materials delivered to the site -can this be
reduced or recycled.
•Ensure that deliveries are rejected if damaged or incomplete
•Make sure storage areas are safe, secure and weatherproof (where required)
•Store liquids away from drains, burns and in bunded areas to prevent
pollution.
SITE ACTIVITIES

• Ensure options for the use of reclaimed and recycled

construction materials, that meet the materials
specification are considered.
• Recycle suitable spoil, demolition materials, prunings,
and surplus construction material arising from the
works on site to avoid the need to transport materials.
• Keep the site tidy to reduce material losses and waste.
WASTE SEGREAGATION

• Segregate different types of waste as they are

generated using different skips where possible
(given the space available).
• At a minimum there should be skips for wood,
inert and mixed materials, although a skip for
metals may generate some income.
RE CYCLING PROCESS
• Construction waste Re Cycling is the process of
separating and Re Cycling recoverable waste
materials created during construction.
• Construction Waste material may include
things which could be Re-Cycled as Bricks,
Cardboard, Concrete Scraps, Metals,
Plastic,Aluminiuem,Wood etc.
* The most important step for Re Cycling of construction waste is on –site separation.
Initially this will take some extra effort and training of constructional personal. Once
separation habits are established on site separation can be done at little or no additional
cost.

*The initial steps in construction waste reduction strategy is good planning.

*Design should be based on standard sizes and material should be order accordingly.
Additionally using high quality materials such as engineered products reduces the
rejects.

*This approach can reduce the amount of materials needing to be Re-Cycled and bolster
profitability and economy for the builders and contractors.
