 By the end of Session 1, participants will be able to:

• Define what listening is.


• Demonstrate why listening is a receptive, constructive,
collaborative and transformative process.

Activity: Listen and Draw

There is an object like a cube in the top of left hand corner.

It has a bow on top of it. There is a circle in the bottom left hand

corner. Two straight lines inside it makes a corner. In the middle on the

right hand side, there is a four-sided shape like two triangles together.

 Listening is………………….
• Receptive: listeners decode, receive, and ‘catch’ the transferred
idea, message, content, images, impressions, thoughts, beliefs,
attitudes and emotions.

• Constructive: listeners attempt to understand and interpret what


the speaker says by using their prior knowledge or schemata as a
frame of reference.

• Collaborative: listeners negotiate meanings with the


speaker and respond by showing interest, nodding head,
etc.

• Transformative: the relationship between listener and


speaker may change as a result of the interaction (e.g. listener
may become more empathetic with the speaker).

In conclusion, Listening is
the process of decoding the messages from
what you hear and then interpret/understand
the speaker says by using prior knowledge
through negotiating meaning and responding
with the speaker.
Why is listening receptive, constructive,
collaborative and transformative?
 Listening contains 4 essential key elements as follow:
• Receptive: decode or catch what you hear.

• Constructive: use your prior knowledge to infer something

• Collaborative: interaction between speaker and listener

• Transformative: relationship between speaker and listener

Spoken Discourse
• It lasts a very short time and there is no chance to listen again.
• Composed mainly short phrases/clauses: “ you know, you see, I
mean……”
• Words can be unclear.
• Consists of fillers “um, uh, ah, mn…..”
• Consists of informal expressions “wanna instead of want to, look
blue instead of look sad”
• Varieties of accents.
