Arthropoda and Annelida phylum

Phylum Arthropoda.

The Arthropoda ( named from the Greek arthros (jointed) and poda (foot)) are the

largest group of organisms and they occur in all environments on earth.
includes: spiders, ticks, mites, and insects There are over 800,000 species.
Characteristics of the Arthropoda

 1- A segmented body divided into head, thorax(chest), trunk(stem) and abdomen.

 2- All arthropods have jointed appendages which include legs, wings and mouth parts

have functions such as feeding, sensing the environment, walking, defending against predators.

 3- The body is covered with an exoskeleton or cuticle composed of protein, lipids, and calcium

carbonate.

 4- Most arthropods have a pair of compound eyes and the circulatory system is open and consists of

a heart, arteries with  separate sexes.

 5- Bilateral symmetry. This means that the left and right sides are the same.
The phylum Arthropoda is commonly divided into
four groups

Insects.

myriapods (including centipedes and millipedes)

arachnids (including spiders, mites and scorpions)
crustaceans (including slaters, prawn and crabs)
 Annelida also known as the ringed worms or segmented worms, are a
including lugworms, earthworms, and leeches. The species exist in and
 have adapted to various ecologies. Body wall covered with a cuticle
 secreted by the epidermis.
Lugworm Leech earthworm
General characteristics of Phylum Annelida

 1-15,000 Annelid species.

 2-Bilatiral symmetrical.
 3-Habitat: marine, fresh water and soil environment.
 4-complex digestive system with closed circulatory system.
 5-Epidermis is primary gas exchange organ.
 6-Reproduce sexually or asexually.
 7-Body possesses 3 separate sections.
Phylum Annelida is divided into four main classes.
.
Class 1 Polychaeta
(Polys: many; chaite:hair)
Habitat: They are marine, terrestrial, and freshwater.
Examples:  (sandworm).
 Class 2 Oligochaeta
 (Oligos: few, chaite: hair)
 Habitat: mostly terrestrial and few are freshwater
 Examples:  (Earthworm).
 Class 3 Hiradinea
 (Hirudo: leech)
 Habitat: primarily freshwater but some are parasitic
 Examples: (Leech)

Class 4 Archiannelida
Habitat: They are marine.
Example:Orbinia sertulata
Nereis (sandworm) Orbinia sertulata
