WHAT IS THEORY ?
 The thinking that occurs With a discipline or coherent group of tested general
that can be used as principles of explanation and prediction.

 For example: Einstein’s theory of relativity.

Sources of theories
 Humanities: Those branches of knowledge that concern with human beings and their culture or with
analytic and critical methods of inquiry derived from an appreciation of human values and of the unique
ability of the human spirit to express itself.
 Nature Science: When trying to describe the nature of science, it can be useful to think of science as
a culture in just the same way that we think of the cultural worlds of art and music. We need to understand
and talk art or music when we enter these worlds. In the same way, we need to be able to understand and
talk science.
 Social Science: any branch of academic study or science that deals with human behaviour in its social and
cultural aspects. Usually included within the social sciences are cultural  anthropology, sociology,
psychology, political science, and economics.
Structure-Oriented Theories.

Structure-Oriented theories are concerned primarily with

analyzing the components of the curriculum and their
interrelationships.
Structure-oriented theories tend to be descriptive and
explanatory in intent.
Five major types of content sequence
1.- "world related“ sequences
The content structure reflects the empirical relationships among events, people,
and things

2.- "concept related“ sequences

Reflect the organization of the conceptual world.

3.- "Inquiry-related“ sequences

The curriculum in relation to a particular method of inquiry

4.- "Learning-related“ sequences

Draw from the knowledge of the psychology of learning in making decision
(begin with content or easiest skills
5.-"utilization related.“sequences
Learning in relation to three possible contexts for utilization -social,
personal, and career.
The Functions of Theory
 Educators may ask, “Why do we need theory
at all?” Often, they do not wait for a reply
and state, “I do not need your damn theory.”
Many writers have ascribed four functions to
theory:

OF A THEORY
FUNCTIONS
A. Description.

B. Prediction.

C. Explanation.

D. Guidance.
CLASSIFYING CURRICULUM THEORIES
It seems most useful to divide curriculum theories into the following four categories, based upon their
domains of inquiry.
 Structure-oriented theories
The components of the curriculum and their interrelationships
 Value-oriented theories
Analyzing the values and assumptions of curriculum makers and their products.
 Content-oriented theories
Determining the content of the curriculum.
 Process-oriented theories
Describing how curriculum are developed or recommending how they should be developed.

VALUE ORIENTED
THEORIES

• value oriented theorists seem to be

primarly engaged in what might be
termed “educational consciousness-
raising”attempting to sensitize educators
to the values issues that lie at the hearts
of both the hidden and the state curricula.
1. In what ways do the schools replicate the power
differentials in the larger society
2. What is the nature of a truly liberated individual
In their inquires ,value-oriented
and how does schooling inhibit such liberation?
theorists tend to examine issues
such as the following. 3. How do schools consciously or unwittingly
mold children and youth to fit into societal roles
predetermined by race and class?
Main currents of curriculum theory.

1. Academic 3. Sociological

2. Humanistic
Main currents of curriculum theory
 Academic:
The objective of education is to specialize each student
in a specific field of knowledge.
 Humanistic:
Studies have to help a person reach their full potential
and long-term emotional well-being.
 Sociological:
Studies as a way to prepare students for the world of
work.
