PREPOSITIONS

OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, you must:
• differentiate preposition of time from
preposition of place;
• make vivid descriptions using prepositions;
and
• use prepositions correctly.
WHAT IS PREPOSITION?
A preposition is a word that expresses the
relationship between a noun and another
word.
Most prepositions deals with location and
are easy to learn.

inside outside around in front of
beside beyond behind next to
near nearby by along (side)
up down toward since*
before* after* during until*
with without within upon
into out (of) off but*
between among except about
like as beneath underneath
despite in spite of under

*These can also be used as conjunctions.


REMEMBER!
• Some prepositions, however, have more that one
meaning and can be very confusing. (in, on, at, to,
from, for, of)
• Generally, in, on, and at indicate location.
• To and from imply movement toward or away from
something.
• However, to can also indicate duration.
• Many prepositions are also used in expressions.
PREPOSITION OF
TIME
AT, IN,
ON
Use AT to designate specific
times.
EXAMPLES:
• The train is due at 12:15 p.m.
• The children start school at 6 o’clock.
• She drinks coffee at lunch.
• At breakfast, I eat pancakes.
Use ON to designate days and
dates.
EXAMPLES:
• My brother is coming on Monday.
• We’re having a party on the 4th of July.
• Our 2nd Preliminary Examination is on
November 23 – 25.
Use IN for nonspecific times
during a day, a month or a year.
EXAMPLES:
• She likes to jog in the morning.
• He started the job in 2015.
• He’s going to quit in August.

PLACE
AT, IN,
ON
Use AT for specific location/addresses
and shows an exact position.
EXAMPLES:
• She’s waiting at the entrance.
• I work at the bank.
• Johnny Bravo lives at Blk 5 Lot Borez St.
San Isidro Heights, Laguna.
Use ON to designate names of streets or
avenues, and if something is located on a
surface or attached to something.
EXAMPLES:
• The mug is on the floor.
• The mirror is on the wall.
• Her house is on Borez Road.
Use IN for the name of land-areas (towns,
countries, states, and continents), and if
something is inside something.
EXAMPLES:
• The apples are in the box.
• There are 40 students in the room.
• She lives in Quezon City.
