OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, you must:
• define nonfiction;
• identify the different genres of nonfiction;
• organize information about a chosen subject using a
graphic organizer; and
• organize information using a topic outline.
WHAT IS NONFICTION?
• It refers to literature based in fact. It is the broadest
category of literature.
• It is a broad genre of writing that encompasses all
books that aren’t rooted in a fictional narrative.
• Nonfiction writing can be based in history and
biography, it can be instructional, it can offer
commentary and humor, and it can ponder
philosophical questions.
GENRES OF NONFICTION

GRAPHIC ORGANIZER
• A graphic organizer is a visual and graphic display
that depicts the relationships between facts, terms,
and or ideas within a learning task.
• Graphic organizers are also sometimes referred to as
knowledge maps, concept maps, story maps,
cognitive organizers, advance organizers, or concept
diagrams.
VENN DIAGRAM
• It helps you visually
represent a
comparison of
differences and
similarities between
two subjects.
SEMANTIC WEB
• This allows you to
bring out many
sub-ideas related
to the main idea.
FLOW CHART
• A flowchart is a type
of diagram that
represents a
workflow or process
or a systematic
organization of
ideas.

WHAT IS A TOPIC OUTLINE?
• A topic outline arranges your ideas hierarchically
(showing which are main and which are sub-points), in
the sequence you want, and shows what you will talk
about.
• As the name implies, it identifies all the little mini-
topics that your paper will comprise, and shows how
they relate.
EXAMPLE:

Make a topic outline about any of the following topics:
• Friendship
• Poverty
• Family
• Love
