LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
1. identify the different non-linear texts that can be used to
present data;
2. transcode information from linear to non-linear text
effectively; and
3. determine the effect of textual aids like advance organizers,
titles, nonlinear illustrations, etc. on the understanding of a
text.
ESSENTIAL QUESTION

What’s the importance of effective

use of textual aids in conveying
information?
LESSON TARGET

Textual Aids in
Understanding Texts
VISUAL TEXT
QUESTIONS :
• Using this infographic on COVID-19 Philippine Situation issued on July
24, 2020 by the  Department of Health, answer the following items on your
notebook.
• 1. Identify the number of active cases in the country.
• 2. Enumerate the different classifications of active cases.
• 3. Describe each classification of active cases.
• 4. Identify the number of active cases based on their classifications.
• 5. As per report, determine the number of probable and suspected cases.

TEXTUAL AIDS
are educational instruments that could be written or
printed, or other ways of
emphasizing the essential phrases, thoughts, graphs,

LINEAR TEXT AND NON-LINEAR TEXT

The difference between a linear text and nonlinear text is the reading path
or the way the reader reads it.
A LINEAR TEXT is a traditional text that needs to be read from beginning
to end to make sense of the text.

A NONLINEAR TEXT, on the other hand, is not required to be read from

beginning to end since its reading path is non sequential.
Meaning, the reader can understand even if he/she reads any part of the text.
LINEAR TEXTS NON-LINEAR TEXTS
• Newspapers • Tables / Charts
• Diagrams:
• Novels Flow, Venn, Fishbone
• Short Stories • Graphic Organizers:
• Poems Concept Maps, Spider Maps
• Graphs - Pie, Line, Picto , Bar
• Letters • Posters
• Speeches • Infographics
• Advertisements, etc.
• Dialogues
• Educational texts, etc.
TABLE
-displays precise
numerical data and
presents this
summarized
information in rows
and columns.
GRAPHIC ORGANIZERS

• Are visual displays that have key content information.

These textual aids provide learners with structure for
abstract concepts.
• These are usually created and designed for those who
have trouble organizing information and thoughts.
CONCEPT MAPS
• It shows concepts and
ideas and the relationships
among them. You create a
concept map by writing key
words
(sometimes enclosed in
shapes such as circles,
boxes, triangles, etc.) and
then drawing arrows
between the ideas that are
related.
TIMELINE
• displays a list of events in
chronological order
• It is typically a graphic
design showing a long bar
labelled with dates
paralleling it
• BAR GRAPH
• uses bars to compare data
among categories
• A bar graph may run
horizontally or vertically.
• The important thing to know
is that the longer the bar, the
greater its value.
• LINE GRAPH
• Like bar graphs, line
graphs compare
categories, but they’re
most often used to show
trends or value of
something over time.
• PICTOGRAPH
• shows data using images
• each image stands for a
certain number of things
• INFOGRAPHICS
• a collection of imagery, charts,
and minimal text that gives an
easy-to understand overview of a
topic
• use striking, engaging visuals to
communicate information quickly
and clearly
• DIAGRAMS

• VENN DIAGRAM
• used to identify, classify,
categorize and recognize
similarities and
differences of two or
more subjects, ideas,
thoughts or concepts
• FISHBONE DIAGRAM
• also known as an Ishikawa
diagram
• identifies the connection
between concepts (or the
possible causes for an effect
or problem
PLENARY:

Why is it necessary to be able to read

and interpret non-linear texts in this
modern time?
INDIVIDUAL TASK:
INFOGRAPHICS
Students will make an infographic on their chosen topic relevant to
society. It can be on health, safety, and other issues arising today.
Criteria:
1. Appropriateness of Non-Linear Text -5
2.Completeness of Information – 10
3. Creativity – 5
