PREFACE
College of Teacher Education, particularly those who chose English as their line of
expertise, aims to equip future teachers with proficiency and competency in both oral and
written communication to aid in uplifting the English proficiency and competency of the
Philippine community.

Thus, this Learning Module (LM) in Language, Culture, and Society supports the
aim of the College in developing, enhancing, and strengthening students’ English
proficiency and competency through the lessons, activities, and assessment incorporated.

Specifically, this LM elaborates significances and impacts of language to culture

and society, and how culture and society, particularly: geography, gender, age, and societal
issues influence the language as well.

The LM is divided into 9 lessons, each emphasizing the outcomes and topics
students need to acquire through simplified discussions, activities, and assessments.

Lesson 1 is all about Sociolinguistics, particularly the relationship between

language and society and the social functions of language as theorized by prominent
linguists namely: Halliday, Jakobson, Saussure, Austin, and Searle.

Lesson 2 is all about the difference among the main varieties of language which are
dialects, sociolects, and registers.

Lesson 3 is all about Multilingualism particularly: language choices, language

maintenance and shift, linguistic varieties, and their factors and examples.

Lesson 4 is all about National Language and Planning specifically the processes
and the people involved.

Lesson 5 is all about the impact of gender and age, including the social class and
status in the language of the society.

Lesson 6 is all about Language Change, its reasons, processes, and even how to
study language change.

Lesson 7 is all about Gender, Politeness, and Stereotypes specifically the features
of women’s language, linguistic features as politeness devices, linguistic construction of
sexuality, and sexist language.

Lesson 8 is all about Language, Cognition, and Culture which elaborates the
relationship among language, thought, reality especially when taking into account culture
of the society, and social factors such as gender construction and social identity.

Lesson 9 is all about analyzing Discourse through investigating pragmatics,

conversational maxims, politeness, ethnography of speaking, discourse analysis, and
critical discourse analysis.

It is hoped that this LM helps students acquire necessary knowledge and skills they
may use in the future as educators.
