Being John Malkovich – Restaurant Scene
We have already seen the
perspective of people who
went through the tunnel so the
audience expects a certain
thing to happen, this is very
different to the our
expectations and as a result the
scene stands out more than
others and is much more
recognizable.
A scene like this never happens
again in the film which adds to
the shock and unexpectedness
of the scene
The first thing we see is a female
body as the head of John Malkovich is
slowly revealed to us and the
character which makes it as
unexpected as it can, since the body
is so different from the head.
To achieve this effect, John
Malkovich’s body is edited onto
the bodies of random people.
His head doesn’t match the rest
of the body which adds to the
absurdity and unnerving feel of
the scene.
There are rapid camera
movements which shows us the
people at other tables and
parts of the restaurant. This
quick movement is the POV of
the real John Malkovich, which
conveys to the audience the
overwhelming horror that he is
experiencing.
Because of the character’s
reaction, the movement of the
camera and the crowded
restaurant, it gives us an
overwhelming and unnerved
feel to the scene, with the
absurdity of what is happening
enhancing this feeling.
This scene is so absurd and weird that
it is comedic even though it shows
the character having a mental
breakdown when he experiences it.

During the conversation, only 4
angles are used: close ups of
the two characters and two
over-shoulder shots, in no
scene do we see both
characters’ faces at the same
time.
This scene is an interrogation scene
between Agent Smith and Neo. It is
designed to feel claustrophobic with
it taking place in a small room with
guards standing to the sides. It is a
tense interrogation so the
claustrophobic feeling makes sense.

him look more genuine and human,
which further leads the audience to
wonder if the deal will be accepted,
keeping them on the edge of their
seat.
