STRATEGIES FOR
READING
• Be familiar with the direction
• Do not spend too much time reading the passage
• Do not worry if the reading passage is on a topic you are
unfamiliar with.
• Do not spend too much time on a question you are unsure of
• Guess to complete the section before time is up
Main idea questions In the first line of each paragraph
Directly an indirectly detail question Choose a key word in the question
Pronoun question The question will tell you where the
pronoun is located in the passage
Transition question Look at the beginning and the end of
paragraph
Vocabulary question The question will tell you where the
pronoun is located in the passage
“Where in the passage” question The answer choice give you the four
possible location of the correct answer
For tone, purpose and course Look at the first line of each paragraph
question
• Skim the reading passage to determine the main idea and the
overall organization of ideas in the passage.
• Look a head at the questions to determine what language
skills are being tested in the questions. Different language
skills are different way to answer
• Read the part of the passage that contains the answer
carefully
• Choose the best answer to each question from the four
choices listed in your test
• Monitor the time carefully
