Selecting A Topic for CS/IS Research

 Research: The activity of a diligent and

systematic inquiry or investigation in an area, with
the objective of discovering or revising facts,
theories, applications etc. The goal is to discover
and disseminate new knowledge
 The key is Novelty, solving the gap in theory
Novelty: creating new or reviewing published
info? (Hopkins, 2002)
create review
 Most research projects are so-called original investigations.
 You obtain new data or information about a phenomenon.
 You reach a conclusion and try to publish it.
 Some research projects are reviews of the literature.
 You use other researchers' published data or info about a phenomenon.
 A quantitative statistical review is called a meta-analysis.
 You should "earn your spurs" doing original research before taking on a
stand-alone review.
 But a write-up of an original investigation always has to include a short
review of literature.
Novelty (Daud, 2019)
 Novelty (Latin word novus for "new") is the quality of being new, or
following from that, of being striking, original or unusual. Novelty
may be the shared experience of a new cultural phenomenon or the
subjective perception of an individual. The quality or state of being
new, different, and interesting (Yehya A. Salih, 2018)
 • Novelty is a characteristic of entity that carries one or aspects that
are 'new' and 'original’. In engineering design, novelty is often spoken
in reference to product, process, person, and situation. Let us consider
the product facet that is much easier to explain. A product is
considered novel if it carries one or more features that 'new' and
'original'. (Siddharth, 2018)
Novelty (Daud, 2019)
Novelty (Daud, 2019)
 NOVELTY: kebaruan yang memberikan “contribution to
the body of knowledge”
 Body of knowledge (Theory, Propositional Knowledge,
Concept of phenomenon)
 Kita bisa memberikan kebaruan pada teori (butuh waktu
dan usaha yang keras), propositional knowledge (bisa),
Concept of phenomenon (bisa)
Verhaegen, Vandevenne, & Duflou, 2012
How to assess the novelty of your research?
 Do a systematic literature review
 obtain the state of the art
 See the position of your work among others
 Is your work just repeating other researcher’s work?

Selecting A Topic for Your Research
 Find the key research issues in each topic
 For example,
 Key issues in e-commerce research:
 Purchase intention
 Loyalty/repurchase intention
 Electronic words-of-mouth (ewom)
 Etc
 Sensing the editor expectation, by looking at the title of the
papers in reputable journals/conferences
 You are in the right ‘direction’, when your topic is ‘similar’ and
having the same ‘taste’ to those papers

How to Replicate the Research from
Other Scholars?
 Theeasiest way to find research topics is by looking at
other work and replicating and adapting it in different
context/domain.
 Ensure within the target context/domain, the topic provides a
new perspective
 For example, my PACIS paper:
 Trust Transfer and Its Effects on The Continuance Usage of
Mobile Service in B2C E-marketplaces
 Was inspired by:
 Trust transfer in the continued usage of public e-services
How to Replicate the Research from
Other Scholars?
 Exercise, please replicate this research in different
domain:
 Trust transfer in the continued usage of public e-services
(from Government Information Quarterly)
 Solutions to barriers of supply chain management
ATM Principles

T (Tiru)
M (Modifikasi)
