Introduction and Definition

 Jaundice:-

Jaundice is the yellow discoloration of the skin


caused by accumulation of excess bilirubin in the
tissue and serum.
Newborn or Neonatal Jaundice

 Yellow discoloration of the skin and the mucosa due to accumulation of bilirubin
in the tissue and plasma in the neonates or newborn.
 Normal level of bilirubin in newborn- 5 mg/dl
 Normal level of bilirubin in adult- 1.2 mg/dl
 More than 7 mg/dl
 30-50 % of term newborn
Risk Factors of New born Jaundice
JAUNDICE
J – Jaundice within first 24hrs of life
A – A sibling who was jaundiced as neonate
U – Unrecognized hemolysis
N – Non-Optimal Sucking/Nursing
D – Deficiency of G6PD
I – Infection
C – Cephalhematoma / Bruising
E – East Asian/North Indian
Causes of New born Jaundice
 1. Hemolytic Disorders
 2. STORCH
S – Syphillis
T – Toxoplasmosis
O – Other
R – Rubella
C – Cytomegalovirus
H – Herpis Simplex
3. Liver Problem
4. Premature Babies
5. Metabolic and Endocrine Disorder
Types of New born Jaundice

 Physiological Jaundice

 Pathological Jaundice
Physiological Jaundice

 Appear after 24hrs


 Total bilirubin rises by less than 5 mg/dl per day
 Maximum intensity by 4th to 5th day in term & 7th day in Preterm
 Serum level less than 15 mg/dl
 Clinically not detectable after 14 days
Pathological Jaundice

 Appears age appears within 24hrs of age


 Increase of bilirubin > 5 mg/dl per day
 Serum Bilirubin > 15 mg/dl
 Jaundice days presenting after 14 days
 Stools clay / white colored and urine staining yellow staining clothes
 Direct Bilirubin > 2 mg/dl
Sign and Symptoms of New born Jaundice
 Slight yellowish tint on the skin
 Yellow stains on the whites of the eyes
 Low appetite
 Increased drowsiness
 Restlessness
 More irritable than usual
 Dark yellow urine
 Light colored or pale stool
 Arching of the back
 Fever and Vomiting
