BREAST CYST
 A breast cyst is a fluid filled sac within the
breast.
 Patient have one or many breast cyst.
 They are often described as round or oval
lump with distinct edges.
 A breast usually feel like a soft grape or a
water filled balloon.
INTRODUCTION
 But sometime a breast cyst feel like firm.
 Breast cyst are common in women in their
30 s and 40 s.
 It is estimated that 7% of women in the
western world develop palpable breast
cysts.
 There is preliminary evidence that women
with breast cysts may be at an increased
risk of breast cancer, especially at younger
EPIDEMIOLOGY ages.
 In males, the occurrence of breast cysts is
rare and may be an indication of
malignancy.
 The cause of breast cyst remain unknown.
 Breast cyst develop when an overgrowth of
gland & connective tissue block milk ducts,
causing them to dilate & fill with fluid.

 MEDICAL MANAGEMNET

 Breast cyst don’t require treatment unless a cyst is


large & painful or otherwise uncomfortable.
 Using oral contraceptive to regulate menstrual
cycles may help reduce the recurrence of breast
cyst. (Hormone therapy)
 Encourage to wear a supportive Bra a good support
MANAGEMENT to surrounding breast tissue may help relieve some
discomfort.
 SURGICAL MANAGEMENT

 Typical treatment involves a needle aspiration


biopsy.
 Aspirated cysts often recur definitive treatment
may require surgery.
 Surgical removal of a breast cyst is an option only.
MANAGEMENT  Breast cyst contains blood-tinged fluid & display
other worrisome sign, surgery may be considered.
 Lumpectomy is a surgical removal of the discrete
portion or “lump” of breast tissue.
FIBROCYSTIC BREAST DISEASE
 Fibrocystic breast are characterized by lumpiness
& usually discomfort in one or more breast.
 Fibrocystic breast disease are also called as
fibrocystic changes.
 Fibrocystic changes occur during ovulation and
just before menstruation.
 During these times, hormone level changes often

nodule or cyst which feel like lump when touched.
 The nodule or cysts can spread through the breast.
 If the lump is not filled with fluid, it is called as
fibroadenoma.
 Fibroadenoma is a solarity firm distinct lumps,
composed of a mass or lump of fibrous tissue.
 It is noncancerous breast lumps which can
sometimes cause discomfort often

EVALUATION
 There are no specific treatments for fibrocystic breast
disease.
1) Relief of symptoms
 Adequate support of the breast & perhaps wearing a bra at
night may provide relief from many of the symptoms of
fibrocystic breast disease.
 Anti-inflammatory medication, acetaminophen & NSAID
reduce breast pain.
 Avoid caffeine & chocolate, eliminate excessive dietary fat
MANAGEMENT & limit salt intake & increase doses of vitamins. (Vit. A,
C, E, B6)
2) Hormonal therapy
 For severe symptoms, doctor may prescribe hormonal
therapy.
 Birth control pills.
 Danazol (domocrine) or Bromocriptine. (300-400 mg per
day)
