IMPRESSION MANAGEMENT

Impression management is a conscious or subconscious process

in which people attempt to influence the perceptions of other
people about a person, object or event. They do so by
regulating and controlling information in social interaction.
It is the goal-directed activity of controlling or regulating
information in order to influence the impressions formed by
an audience.
Components of impression management

Impression Motivation

The degree to which an individual actually manages the
impression that he or she makes

Impression Construction

Refers to individual consciously choosing an image to
convey and how to go about doing that
Erving Goffman's Theory

 We are all actors within the Social World, a central theme

from Goffman work.
 Goffman argues that the self is simply nothing more than
“Self Presentations” and “Role Performances.”
 Social life as a theatre, with social scripts, performances and
actors & roles that perform in the Front and Back Regions
of self.
First impression
First impression is the
event when one person
first encounters another
person and forms a
mental image of that
person. Impression
accuracy varies
depending on the
observer and the target
being observed.
