INTRODUCTION

 MAIZE ranks third most grown crop in the world.

Cultivated area of more than 118 million hectares.
Annual production is about 600 million metric
tones.

 In Pakistan, Maize is the fourth largest grown

crop. The area under maize is over one million
hectare and production is 3.5 million metric tones.
 Punjab contributes 39% of the total area under
maize and 30% of total production.

 KPK contributes 56% of the total area and 63%

of the production.

 While 5% of the total area and 3% of the total

production is contributed by Sindh and
Balochistan.
OBJECTIVE

Quantifying the impact of split dosses of

Nitrogen and different rates of application
on yield and yield components of maize
REVIEW OF LITERATURE
 Nitrogen (N) management in maize production system is one of the
main concerns since it is the most important and primary nutrient for
growth and development of the crop.
(Blumenthal et al., 2008)

 Hence, application of fertilizer N resulting in higher biomass is

commonly increased. Optimum rate and time of N application can
enhance yield productivity and nutrient use efficiencies while reducing
the environmental pollution.
(Fernbndez et al., 2009 and Nielsen et al., 2013)
 N application beyond the optimum requirement of maize could not
increase yield and may lead to an elevated level of NO3 in the soil
and susceptibility to NO3 loss by leaching.
(Gehl et al., 2005)

 Another report also indicated that abundant N supply favors NH3

losses, especially if the supply is in excess of plant requirements.
(Fageria et al., 2005)
