PROBLEMS
Cultivable land is decreasing due to urbanization as well industrialization.

There is intensive need to increase the multiple index of land.

(Awal et al., 2006).

Conventional cropping systems of Pakistan are much exhaustive and depleting

soil badly.
These cropping systems have failed to fulfill the requirements of farmers.

(Marer et al., 2007).

Conti…
Shortage of edible oil/ oilseeds

Domestic production = 0.446 million tons (26% fulfills necessity)

Imports = > 70%

Edible oil import Bill= Rs. 152.514 billion (July 2016-March 2017)

(Govt. of Pakistan, 2017)

Conti…
Soybean inclusion in the cropping scheme is difficult due to overlapping of
growing season of maize (Maluleke et al., 2005).

Maize is nitro positive and needs ample quantity of nitrogen for attaining high
yield. Similarly, being the C4 crop demands nutrients in ample quantity
(Hokmalipour et al., 2010).

Nitrogen fertilizer is a key nutrient in the production of maize crop

(Cathcart and Swanton, 2003).
SOLUTIONS TO ADDRESS THE
PROBLEMS
Increase the area under oilseed crops
(Khan et al., 2005; 2012)

Replacement of poor quality cultivars/crops

(Przybylski et al., 2005)

Intercropping
(Khan et al., 2012)
Conti…
 Being a leguminous crop its adjustment in the present cropping systems
would
pave the role to stable the economical conditions of the local farmers.
(Maluleke et al., 2005).

Maize is nitro positive and needs ample quantity of nitrogen for attaining high
yield. Similarly, being the C4 crop demands nutrients in ample quantity
(Hokmalipour et al., 2010). Hence, in order to enhance the maize production on
sustainable basis soybean inclusion in cropping scheme contribute a lot.
