SANTHAL

REBELLION

WHO WERE SANTHALS :

• They were tribal people from damin-i-koh village .

• They were the agricultural people settled in Rajmahal Hills of Bihar and some areas of west bengal. British turned to them for the
expansion of the revenue through agriculture.

• The Santhals are the largest tribal group in India today as per the population figures. They are native to the Indian states of
predominantly Jharkhand, West Bengal and Odisha.

• Until the 19th century, they lived their lives in harmony with nature and practised shifting agriculture and hunting. They lived in the
hilly regions of Birbhum, Barabhum, Manbhum, Palamau and Chhotanagpur.

• The Santhals were fierce fighters but they were honourable. According to some British observers of the time, the Santhals used
poisoned arrows for hunting but did not use poisoned arrows against their enemies in war.

• The Santhal rebellion was overshadowed by the revolt of 1857 but it remains a watershed in the evolution of the modern Santhal
identity.
BEGINNING OF THE REBELLION

• On 30 June 1855, two Santal rebel leaders, Sidhu and Kanhu Murmu, mobilized ten thousand Santhals and declared a rebellion

against British colonists.

• Since santhals were having a large area of land and with passage of time these lands were taken off by the zamindars .

• It all began with the creation of Damin-i-Koh the area surrounding the Rajmahal Hills.

• Due to the zamindari system of east india company to illegally occupying their (santhals) lands.

• On 30 June 1855, they decided to take the rebellion and 1855-1856 this rebellion took place under the guidance of sardar Dheer
singh manjhi .

• Moreover 60000 santhaltook part in this rebellion


STEPS TAKEN BY SANTHAL IN BETWEEN (1855-1856)

• First of all they decided to attack on mahajans and sahukars and they also hired all their money and property.

• Sidhu, kanhu, chand, bhairav were the four brave santhal who took the initiative of controlling the santhals
alongwith other 10000 santhals aand this was held at a village named bhagnadih.

• The centre of this rebellion was from bhagalpur to mountain of rajmahal.

• santhal also destroyed police station, post office, and other all property that were of sahukars and zamindars.
• They in order to fight with british they uses bow and arrow, bhala etc
CONCLUSION

• Moreover continuous revenge by the santhals made british more arrogant and they decided to use the DANAM NITI .

• They( british) also applied martial law on santhals and certain prizes were also been there for kiiling santhals.

• In the revolt around 15000 santhals were killed.

• Their property and villages were also destroyed.

• Finally leader of santhal sidhu and kanhu were also caught by british army.

• Now no longer there were any leader left for guiding santhals and thus this revolt came into end.

• But after some time british army somehow helped santhals in enjoying their lands and santhal pargana was also made by the
army.
