WHAT IS A GROUP/ TEAM?

• A TEAM IS DEFINED AS A GROUP OF


PEOPLE WHO PERFORM
INTERDEPENDENT TASKS TO WORK
TOWARD ACCOMPLISHING A COMMON
MISSION OR SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE.
STAGES OF GROUP FORMATION, AND HOW
THEY HELP YOUR TEAM SUCCESSFUL
#1 FORMING STAGE
• THE FIRST STAGE OF TEAM DEVELOPMENT IS FORMING.

• AT THE START, MOST ARE EXCITED TO START SOMETHING NEW AND


TO GET TO KNOW THE OTHER TEAM MEMBERS.

• AS THE GROUP STARTS TO FAMILIARIZE THEMSELVES, ROLES AND


RESPONSIBILITIES WILL BEGIN TO FORM. IT IS IMPORTANT FOR TEAM
MEMBERS TO DEVELOP RELATIONSHIPS AND UNDERSTAND WHAT
PART EACH PERSON PLAYS.

• STAGE FOCUSES MORE ON THE PEOPLE THAN ON THE WORK, YOUR


TEAM PROBABLY WON'T BE VERY PRODUCTIVE YET.
#2 STORMING STAGE

• IN THE STORMING STAGE, THE REALITY AND WEIGHT


OF COMPLETING THE TASK AT HAND HAVE NOW HIT
EVERYONE. THE INITIAL FEELINGS OF EXCITEMENT
AND THE NEED TO BE POLITE HAVE LIKELY WORN OFF.
• PERSONALITIES MAY CLASH. MEMBERS MIGHT
DISAGREE OVER HOW TO COMPLETE A TASK . THEY
MAY EVEN QUESTION THE AUTHORITY OR GUIDANCE
OF GROUP LEADERS.
• BUT, IF YOU ARE THE LEADER, REMIND MEMBERS
THAT DISAGREEMENTS ARE NORMAL.
#3 NORMING STAGE

• DURING THE NORMING STAGE, PEOPLE START TO NOTICE


AND APPRECIATE THEIR TEAM MEMBERS' STRENGTHS.
• GROUPS START TO SETTLE INTO A GROOVE. EVERYONE
IS CONTRIBUTING AND WORKING AS A COHESIVE UNIT.
• STORMING SOMETIMES OVERLAPS WITH NORMING. AS
NEW TASKS ARISE, GROUPS MAY STILL EXPERIENCE A
FEW CONFLICTS. IF YOU'VE ALREADY DEALT WITH
DISAGREEMENT BEFORE, IT WILL PROBABLY BE EASIER
TO ADDRESS THIS TIME.
#4 PERFORMING STAGE

• IN THE PERFORMING STAGE, MEMBERS ARE


CONFIDENT, MOTIVATED AND FAMILIAR ENOUGH
WITH THE PROJECT AND THEIR TEAM THAT THEY
CAN OPERATE WITHOUT SUPERVISION. EVERYONE
IS ON THE SAME PAGE AND DRIVING FULL-SPEED
AHEAD TOWARDS THE FINAL GOAL.
• THE FOURTH STAGE IS THE ONE THAT ALL GROUPS
STRIVE TO REACH. YET, SOME DO NOT MAKE IT.
THEY USUALLY FAIL TO OVERCOME CONFLICT AND
CAN'T WORK TOGETHER.
#5 ADJOURNING STAGE

Adjourning Stage
• THIS PHASE IS SOMETIMES KNOWN AS
MOURNING BECAUSE MEMBERS HAVE
GROWN CLOSE AND FEEL A LOSS NOW
THAT THE EXPERIENCE IS OVER.
TASK ROLES

• INITIATOR/CONTRIBUTOR – PROPOSES ORIGINAL IDEAS OR DIFFERENT WAYS OF APPROACHING


GROUP PROBLEMS OR GOALS.

• INFORMATION SEEKER - REQUESTS CLARIFICATION OF COMMENTS IN TERMS OF THEIR. DETERMINES


WHAT INFORMATION IS MISSING AND NEEDS TO BE FOUND BEFORE MOVING FORWARD.

• EVALUATOR/CRITIC – EVALUATES PROPOSALS AGAINST A PREDETERMINED OR OBJECTIVE STANDARD.

• RECORDER – ACTS AS THE SECRETARY OR MINUTE-KEEPER. RECORDS IDEAS AND KEEPS TRACK OF
WHAT GOES ON AT EACH MEETING.

• PULL TOGETHER A FEW DIFFERENT IDEAS AND MAKE THEM COHESIVE.


PERSONAL ROLES

• CONCILIATES DIFFERENCES BETWEEN INDIVIDUALS. SEEKS WAYS TO REDUCE TENSION


AND DIFFUSE A SITUATION BY PROVIDING FURTHER EXPLANATIONS OR
• OFFERS TO CHANGE HIS OR HER POSITION FOR THE GOOD OF THE GROUP. WILLING TO
YIELD POSITION OR MEET OTHERS HALF WAY.
• AFFIRMS, SUPPORTS, AND PRAISES THE EFFORTS OF FELLOW GROUP , POSITIVE ATTITUDE
IN MEETINGS.
• MAKES SURE ALL MEMBERS HAVE A CHANCE TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES BY
ENCOURAGING THE SHY AND QUIET MEMBERS TO CONTRIBUTE THEIR IDEAS.
• COMMENTATOR – PROVIDES FEEDBACK TO THE GROUP ABOUT HOW IT IS FUNCTIONING.
• ACCEPTS WHAT OTHERS SAY AND DECIDE EVEN THOUGH HE OR SHE HAS NOT
CONTRIBUTED TO THE DECISION OR EXPRESSED OWN THOUGHTS.
