INTRAVENOUS INFUSION

THERAPY
PURPOSES

•To supply fluid when clients are unable

to take in an adequate volume of fluids
by mouth.
•To provide salts and other electrolytes
needed to maintain electrolyte balance.
Types of Solution
• Isotonic solution - A solution that has the same salt
concentration as cells and blood( 0.9%saline, Lactated
Ringers,D5W)
• Hypotonic solution- solution that has a lower solute
concentration compared to another
solution(0.45%NaCl, 0.33%NaCl)
• Hypertonic solution- Contains a higher concentration
of solutes (5% dextrose with normal saline,5%
dextrose in 0.45%NaCl, 5% dextrose sin Lactated
Ringer’s.
Factors affecting the procedure
1. Height of the intravenous pole
2. Position of the extremity
3. Constriction or kinking of intravenous
tubing
4. The position of the needle within the
vein
COMPLICATIONS
• INFILTRATION- fluid enters the subcutaneous tissues
• PHLEBITIS- inflammation of the vein
• THROMBOPHLEBITIS- if the inflammation is accompanied
by thrombus
• INFECTION- due to prolonged usage of the same site and
maintenance of the vessel opening
• AIR EMBOLISIM- entrance of air to the circulation causing
obstruction
• FLUID OVERLAOD- due to mistaken calculation or not
correctly working system
STOPPING OF THE PROCEDURE

The procedure should be stopped when

The desire fluid is given to the patient
When over dosing occur
If an allergic signs are apparent due
using a medication
