Experiments
Inference vs Observation

Walk around the house and outside Write down at least 10 different living
for 2 minutes – organisms that you encountered.
Make an observation about each of the ten
Qualitative s Quantitative – which is better?
Make an inference about the interaction between 2
of the organisms that you encountered.

What is a hypothesis?
• An experimental antibiotic was given to
500 people that all had pneumonia
(Breathing disorder which causes fluid in
the lungs) to determine if it would kill the
bacteria that caused the disease. Each
person took the antibiotic (Drug) twice a
day over a period of 10 days.

Example • Results –
• 400 people showed complete recovery
with all bacteria killed
• 60 people showed no change
• 40 people showed an increase in
symptoms (range from more difficulty
breathing to death)

What could we do to
improve the
experiment (get better
data)?

Group group?

Why do you need a

control group?
• An experimental antibiotic is being tested on
pneumonia patients. A group of 500
individuals in various stages of the disease
have been selected to try the new drug. 250 of
these people with be given the antibiotic in
addition to regular medication. The other 250
people will be given a placebo and regular

medication. The patients will all think they are
given the new medication.

• Results –
• Placebo group – 200 full recovery / 30 no
change / 20 deaths
• Antibiotic group – 225 full recovery / 25
deaths
Fix #2

How could this experiment be improved to get better data
