Let us have a recap on our previous

lesson,

 Do you still remember the topic

that we have discuss last time?
Group Activity
The class will be group into four (4):
Group 1: students have a daily allowances
below 30 pesos.
Group 2: students have a daily allowances
below 50 pesos.
Group 3: students have a daily allowances
below 70 pesos.
Group 4: students have a daily allowances
above 70 pesos.
Mechanics
1. Each group will be given 5 minutes to do the
task.
2. Every group must have a leader, time keeper
and (1) representative.
3. The leader will collect all the data ( daily
allowances) from their group that are needed
for the activity.
4. In a manila paper they will construct a
frequency table.
5. Make a histogram in a creative way by using
your body.

Guide Questions:
1. How was your activity? Did you find it easy?

2. What have you observed in your output?

3. How about the shape of your histogram?

4. What type of distribution that we had based

on your output?
Chapter 2: Normal Distribution

Understanding the Normal Curve

Distribution
Lesson Objective
At the end of the lesson the learner is able
to illustrates a normal random variable and
its characteristics.
Code: M11/12SP-IIIc-1
Activity: Visualizing a Normal Distribution
Sketch the graph of the frequency polygon
of each distribution.
1. Graph the frequency polygon of the
following scores of the students in a quiz.

Score (X) f
3 1
2 3
1 1
N 5
It shows like these:

3.5

2.5

2. Now let us increase the number of students
to 14.

Score (X) f

N 14
Observe what will happen to the shape of
graph.

students.

1. From the first graph to the third
graph, what have you observed on
transformation of the figures?
2. If we continue to increase the
number of students, what will be the
shape of the graph?
3. What generalization can you make?
Standard Normal Distribution
Standard normal distribution or standard
normal curve is a normal distribution with a
mean of 0 and standard deviation of 1.
Main Characteristics of the Normal
Distribution Curve
1. The curve is symmetric with respect to
the vertical line passing through the
mean.
2. It approaches the x-axis asymptotically
on both sides.
3. The bell curve varies in shapes
depending on the mean and on the
standard deviation. It can be narrow or
wide. It can be tall or short.
The Important Characteristics of the
Standard Normal Distribution Curve
1. The area enclosed by the curve and the x –
axis is equal to 1.
2. Regions under the curve approximate
probabilities that random values fall in
particular ranges.
3. The curve is symmetric. The area to the
right of 0 is equal to the area the left of 0.
That is, 50% of the area is to the left of the
mean and 50% of the area is to the right of
the mean.
4.
 About 68% of the values are within 1
standard deviation of the mean. About
95% of the values are within 2 standard
deviation of the mean. About 99.8% of the
values are within 3 standard deviation of
the mean.
5. Using the curve and the corresponding
table entails converting an observed value
x to its z- score. The z – score measures
how many standard deviations an
observed x is from the mean
Formula to compute standard score

Example:
Consider 𝜇 = 30 and 𝜎 = 4, complete the table
below:

x z
38
34
30

Group Task:

Think about your answer to the question.

Then discuss it with your group mates in just
5 minutes. And you will present your answer
to the class in just 3 minutes.

“ Why would a large sample set of data be

favourable for making decisions?”
Evaluation
Fill in the blanks with the appropriate word or
phrase to make meaningful statements.
1. The curve of a probability distribution is
formed by __________.
2. The area under a normal curve is equal to
________.
3. There are ______ standard deviation unit at the
baseline of a normal curve.
4. The mean, median, and the mode of a normal
curve are _________.
5. The skewness of a normal curve is 0 because
it is a _______ shape.
