DETERMINE
SUSTA INA BILITY AND
GREEN ENGINEERING

- Green technology plays a fundamental

role in achieving the global sustainable
development goal.

- However, the lack of a widely accepted

classification system for green
technology often hinders the
development and adoption of green
technology.

DETERMINE SUSTAINABILITY AND GREEN ENGINEERING
Explore Sustainability
# Engineering is used in almost all facets of living and in all
countries, and makes possible the existence of human
civilizations. Different regions and societies adapt to their
environments and determine their own resources and uses for
engineering.

# The standards of life achieved in countries are often a

function of engineering-related factors. Recently, efforts have
increased to make engineering activities more sustainable and,
simultaneously, attempts have been made to describe
engineering sustainability and the requirements for it.

4
DETERMINE SUSTAINABILITY AND GREEN ENGINEERING
Explore Sustainability
# In some ways, the concept of engineering sustainability is
simply the application of the general definitions of
sustainability to engineering. In other ways, engineering
sustainability is more complex and involved.

# Engineering sustainability involves the provision of

engineering services in a sustainable manner, which in turn
necessitates that engineering services be provided for all
people in ways that, now and in the future, are sufficient to
provide basic necessities, affordable, not detrimental to the
environment and acceptable to communities and people.

5
DETERMINE SUSTAINABILITY AND GREEN ENGINEERING
Explore Sustainability
# Although this definition has some circular aspects, it
emphasizes some of the essential points of engineering
sustainability. A universal agreement on a definition of
engineering sustainability has not yet been achieved.

#Engineering-related sustainability definitions have been

presented for some specific areas, like energy although
universal agreement on a definition has not yet been achieved.
In some ways, the concept of energy sustainability provides a
parallel case to engineering sustainability.

# Rosen defines energy sustainability as the provision of

energy services for all people in a sustainable manner, i.e., in
ways that, now and in the future, are sufficient to provide basic
necessities, affordable, not detrimental to the environment,
and acceptable to communities and people.

DISCOVER GREEN ENGINEERING
Green engineering is the design, commercialization and
use of processes and products that minimize pollution,
promote sustainability, and protect human health
without sacrificing economic viability and efficiency.

Green engineering embraces the concept that decisions

to protect human health and the environment can have
the greatest impact and cost-effectiveness when applied
early, in the design and development phase of a process
or product.

8
DISCOVER GREEN ENGINEERING
Principles of Green Engineering

Green engineering processes and products:

 Holistically use systems analysis and integrate environmental impact

assessment tools.

 Conserve and improve natural ecosystems while protecting human

health and well-being.

 Use life-cycle thinking in all engineering activities.

 Ensure that all material and energy inputs and outputs are as
inherently safe and benign as possible.

 Minimize depletion of natural resources.

 Strive to prevent waste.

9
DISCOVER GREEN ENGINEERING
Principles of Green Engineering

Additionally, green engineering:

 Develops and applies engineering solutions while being

cognizant of local geography, aspirations, and cultures.

 Creates engineering solutions beyond current or dominant

technologies; improves, innovates, and invents (technologies)
to achieve sustainability.

 Actively engages communities and stakeholders in the

development of engineering solutions.

STRUCTURE MALAYSIA
GREEN TECHNOLOGY
MASTER PLAN

 The Green Technology Master Plan outlines the strategic
plans for green technology development to create a low-
carbon and resource efficient economy.

 This document sets out the immediate course for the

country to embark on a green growth journey. It lays the
foundation for the cultivation of mindset and behavioural
change, to inculcate green lifestyle among the rakyat.

 This Master Plan is essential to facilitate the Transformasi

Nasional 2050, or TN50 which is an initiative to position
Malaysia amongst the top countries in the world in
economic development, citizen well-being and innovation
by the year 2050.

CORRELATE THE ROLE OF ENGINEER TOWARDS
SUSTAINABILITY AND GREEN TECHNOLOGY

 Engineers can play an important role in sustainable development by planning and

building projects that preserve natural resources, are cost-efficient and support
human and natural environments.

 A closed-loop human ecosystem can be used to illustrate the many activities

of engineers that support sustainable development.

 For development to become 'sustainable', engineers must incorporate

'sustainability' into all the planning and engineering of products and projects.

 An engineer has a duty to implement their knowledge of how the world

works to design systems, processes and technology that will benefit humanity.

BREAK DOWN ENVIRONMENTAL
ISSUES
 Environmental problems in the world
The top ten environmental issues are these:

  Climate Change.

  Energy.

  Water.

  Biodiversity and Land Use.

  Chemicals, Toxics and Heavy Metals.

  Air Pollution.

  Waste Management.

  Ozone Layer Depletion.

  Oceans and Fisheries.

  Deforestation.

INNOVATION FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

• Meeting sustainable development goals will require action on a

number of fronts, including harnessing and maximizing the
potential of technological innovation.

• Examples of such technologies include carbon capture and

storage systems, more efficient irrigation methods, essential
medicines, household water purification devices, and
manufacturing processes that minimize waste and pollution.

INNOVATION FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

• While some needed innovations can be fostered through existing

public and private mechanisms at the national level, such efforts have
proven inadequate to meet global sustainability goals, particularly
with regard to meeting the needs of the world’s poorest, most
vulnerable or marginalized in current and future generations.

• Too often, technologies are either not developed at all for lack of a
sufficiently profitable market or if developed, are not accessible or
well-adapted to end-user needs.
