Vincent Van Gogh painted Starry Night in 1889 while in a psychiatric hospital in Arles, France after cutting off his own earlobe during a mental breakdown. The painting depicts the view from his hospital window, though he took artistic license and the sky and stars are fictional. Art critics believe the swirling stars represent Van Gogh's religious feelings and reflections on life and eternity. The brightest star depicted is believed to be the planet Venus as it appeared at the time.

The Dutch artist Vincent Van Gogh has been a sensitive child since childhood.
In his youth, he spent
seven years selling paintings at his uncle's firm, where he found his love for drawing. In May 1889, during discussion of plans with Gauguin, Van Gogh suddenly attacked his friend with a shaver in his hands. It is unknown clear what exactly happened, but later that night, Vincent cut off his earlobe.
He was taken to a psychiatric hospital in
Arles, where a month after the incident, the artist painted the picture "Starry Night".
And although Van Gogh depicted the view
from the hospital window, most of the exhibition is fictional: he could only see the Gauguin wheat field and the sky. In the case of the painting "Starry Night", Van Gogh did not explain his idea in any way. Art critics believe that huge swirling stars refer to religious feelings: reflections on the end of life, on eternity (вечность). The brightest star in the picture, located to the right of the cypress trees, is Venus, which, according to researchers, was such at the time.
