SIGNATURE BRIDGE
India’s first “Signature Bridge ”being constructed across the Yamuna at Wazirabad promises to be a great
attraction of Delhi. An ambitious project of the Delhi tourism, the cable-stayed bridge will link National
Highway number one near existing T-point at Wazirabad on Western bank and Marginal Bund Road at
Khajuri Khas on eastern bank of the river Yamuna, thus connecting North Delhi with East Delhi. With a
length of about 575 meters and a height of 175 meters the proposed Signature Bridge would have a bow-
shaped pylon in the middle. Two high towers will be there to provide double cable support in the inner
periphery of the carriageway. Equipped with eight lanes, this engineering masterpiece will have 1.2 meter
wide central verge, space for anchoring cables, maintenance walkway and crash barrier on either side of
the central verge. The deck will be composite (steel and concrete) while pylon will be in steel. Once
operational the Signature Bridge will eventually improve access between North and west Delhi for the
commuters, who have to pass through the narrow lane on the present bridge in Wazirabad, leading to
heavy traffic jam in the peak hours. Also, to facilitate the movement of vehicular traffic new express lanes
will be constructed to connect Ring Road with the bridge.

Project Objectives and associated Criteria for Project Success

In 1997, 28 school students died in an accident on the narrow Wazirabad bridge. Since then, the Delhi
government had plans to build another parallel wide bridge nearby to alleviate traffic congestion. By the end
of 1998, the Delhi government finalised the draft plan for this bridge. However, the construction of the
bridge was stuck due to multiple reasons - lack of manpower and financial difficulties, being the major
reason. When the project started, its final cost was Rs. 1518.37 crore The Delhi government was tight
handed and it was very difficult for it to shell out the extra rising budget. ₹1,518.37 crores of rupees have
been sanctioned recently through PBDB. The work had started in 2010 on the bridge. A fresh deadline of end
2016 was set in 2013. Since then half a dozen times, deadlines have been missed and fresh deadlines set.
Finally, the bridge was inaugurated on 4 November 2018 by the then Chief Minister of Delhi
Arvind Kejriwal with the aim to ease the burgeoning traffic congestion on the existing Wazirabad bridge.
Project Sponsor/Project Funding
The Delhi government’s finance department suggested that the audit be conducted to resolve the dispute between
the PWD (Public Works Department) and DTTDC (Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation)
over funding.

The Delhi government has ordered a third party audit of funding of the Signature Bridge project, construction of

which has come to a halt due to “non-payment” of contractors, officials said. The project is already delayed by eight

years.

The Delhi government’s finance department suggested that the audit be conducted to resolve the dispute between

the PWD (Public Works Department) and DTTDC (Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation)

over funding. “Finance department suggested letting a third party review the costs and advice. We thought of roping

in DMRC or some other organisation. Subsequently, legitimate dues will be paid. But we have taken a very liberal

view and have been releasing on account payments,” a senior finance department official said.
Summary of Economic parameters:

a. Estimated Investment:-The estimated cost of Signature Bridge, which has been delayed by five years,
is likely to be scaled down by 63 crore by the Delhi government from rs1,574 crore demanded by (DTTDC), which
is constructing it.
DTTDC has submitted the amount to the public work department (PWD) in a revised estimate . PWD is likely to
revise the cost to rs1,511 crore and send notes to the expenditure and finance committee for approval .

b. Actual Investment till date:-The initial cost of the project was Rs 887 crore but due to several delays,
the government has so far released for rs1344 crore.

c. ROI:-Ever since its covid-19 pandemic , tourism has not been attracted to the signature bridge .
Similarities to previous related projects
Similar to Paris’s Eiffel Tower, the Signature Bridge of Delhi too will have the facility of transporting tourists to
the main pillar which is 154 meters high. There are four elevators with a total capacity of carrying 50 people. On
the top of the pillar stands a glass box, that will let visitors get a bird’s-eye view of the whole city.
The Bandra–Worli Sea Link (officially known as Rajiv Gandhi Sea Link) is a bridge that links Bandra in the
Western Suburbs of Mumbai with Worli in South Mumbai. It is a cable-stayed bridge with pre-stressed concrete-
steel viaducts on either side. It is a part of the proposed Western Freeway that will link the Western Suburbs to
Nariman Point in Mumbai's main business district
