Public Law 94-142

 Public Law 94-142 thought of as the legislative heart of special


education. It is to ensure that all handicap children have a free
appropriate public education (Special education) and any related
services that is designed to meet their needs, to assure the right of
handicapped children and parent are protected, and to assess and
assure effectiveness of efforts to educate handicap children.
Individuals With Disabilities Education Act
 November 19, 2004 Congress passed legislation reutilizing IDEA.
IDEA increased the focus of special education from simply ensuring
access to education to improving the educational performance of
students with disabilities and aligning special education services
with the larger national school improvement efforts that include,
standards, assessments , and accountability.
 Highlights of IDEA
 Transition planning for IEP once student turns 16
 Special Educators must be “highly qualified”
 IEPS must include statements of student's present levels, annual goals and must be
written in measurable terms
Individualized Educational Plan

 IEP is a document developed by a team that includes parents/ guardians, special


education teacher, general education teacher, representative from the school
district, an individual to interpret the instructional Implications of the evaluations,
SPEECH and or other related services describing an educational plan. IEP is a
statement of a child's present levels of academic achievement, functional
performance, including involvement and progress in the general education
curriculum. It includes a statement including measurable annual goals,
benchmarks, short term instructional objectives for students who take alternative
assessments aligned to alternate achievement standards.
John F. Miller
 John F. Miller provides special education programming and services for students
with special needs from ages 3-22 years old.
 John F. Miller Mission Statement
 That all students should have the ability to learn and should be given the opportunity to
reach their maximum potential and develop as much self-sufficiency and independence as
possible. That all students will have individualized education programs that reflect their
unique and specialized educational needs, and that these programs will be delivered in the
least restrictive educational environment appropriate to meet their individual needs. That all
students will be provided the opportunity to participate in an educational environment which
preserves their dignity, treats all students with respect, and provides an enriched educational
experience, with activities geared to the interests and specialized instructional needs of
students with the most severe disabilities. That optimal educational progress is achieved
through positive home and school partnerships
Helen J. Stewart
 Helen J. Stewart is a special education school serving students with
significant intellectual disabilities and other secondary disabilities
from ages 6-22 years old. Students attend for specialized instruction
in daily living skills, functional assessments, vocational,
communication, behavioral, and transitional needs. All students
have IEPs.
 Helen J. Stewart Mission Statement
 Helen J. Stewart School provides students with learning activities to develop daily
living, vocational, communication, social, and functional academic skills. We
believe the use of a comprehensive Community-Based-Instruction program is
essential to the generalization of these skills.
Miley Achievement Center

 Miley Achievement Center is a special school that has Elementary and Secondary
supporting students that are severely emotional disturbed. Miley Achievement Center uses
PBIS systems to increase student engagements and academic success through web based,
digitally interactive curriculum and deliver explicit instruction in social emotional and
vocational skills to prepare the students for a success transition into the community. Miley
Achievement Center uses a level system to reward good behavior rather than punish bad
behavior and training appropriate behavior.

 Our mission is to educate students emotionally, behaviorally, and academically.
Variety

 Variety is a special school for children with autism, social emotional


challenges and intellectual disabilities. They offer Applied Behavior
Analysis (ABA) autism programming, a on-site student run
horticulture program, comprehensive graphic arts and food service
program, and extensive community-based special needs vocational
training program.
 Variety Mission Statement
 To provide a positive and safe learning community that fosters academic and
vocational growth. CA commitment to ensure a LRE, through campus-wide
positive behavioral intervention supports, allow all students to read by exit. The
goal for all students to transition to post secondary education, the workforce, and
independent living to make each a productive member of society.
Homebound

 Homebound Services provides instructional services to CCSD


students K-12 who are unable to attend school due to illness, injury,
or other medically related conditions. Conducts instructional
sessions online or at home when needed, adapts instructional
techniques to meet students unique medical needs, assists CCSD
schools with IEPs in a home setting. Students can qualify for
homebound services must be absent for 15 days or more and be
under the care of a licensed physician.
Least Restrictive Environment
 Students with disabilities should spend time with peers
who do not have disabilities. For example, lunch,
specials(physical education, art, library, music), recess,
and general education classrooms with support. LRE is
based upon students educational needs and not their
disability.
