text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers.

RL.3.3 - Describe characters in a story (e.g., their traits, motivations,


or feelings) and explain how their actions contribute to the sequence
of events.
 
SL.3.1- Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions
(one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on
grade 3 topics and texts, building on others' ideas and expressing their
own clearly.

Objectives RL.3.1 – Student will be able to ask questions about a text.

RL.3.3 - Student will be able to answer a question from a text.


 
SL.3.1- Student will be able to engage in the discussion with my
peers. 

Materials Story Map Worksheet, Adaptive paper, pencils, crayons, Book


(Unicorn and Horse) *will be provided
Procedures  Start by setting the classroom expectations. Always Reinforce
students demonstrating the appropriate behavior (verbal praise,
token board, sticker chart, and etc.)
 Remind students of having listening ears, calm hands and a calm
body. Students will wait their turn to speak and answer questions.
 Show students the book Unicorn and the Horse
 Focusing on answer WH questions (who, what, when, where, why,
and how) about the story and identify the main character
 Reinforce, Reinforce, Reinforce students of appropriate
behavior

Lesson Plan

 Explain to students that characters are the who in the story. A


character can be an animal, a person, or a thing.
 Before reading have each student turn to a shoulder partner and
they will Rally Robin about what they think the story will be about.
Set a 1-minute timer for students to each take turns and discuss
what the story will be about
 While reading the story, stop periodically to ask WH questions.
(Ask if the students agree or disagree by showing a thumbs up or
thumbs down)
o How is the Unicorn/ Horse feeling?
o What is the Unicorn doing?
o What happened to Unicorn?
o Who helped Unicorn?
o Who is the main character of the story?

 If students are struggling to answer give them a force choice. For


example, “What is the unicorn doing, Swimming or dancing?”
 Reinforce Students of appropriate behavior with verbal praise
 For students who are nonverbal
o Have them point to or touch pictures in book. For example,
“touch horse”
o Horse being cool? (show thumbs up for “yes” and thumbs
down for “no, not cool”)
 Once you are all done reading, review the characters in the story
 Have students fill in the worksheet and or circle the answer of the
main character. “The main character in the story is ________”
o Students will then cut and color the pictures about the story

Assessment Use the WH questions from the story to mark the IEP binder for each
Student:
+ if students was able to independently answer questions
– if student were not able to answer the questions
P – if a prompt was given
*Products of the completed classwork will be used as DATA for
Progress Monitoring!!!
