“Know Thyself”

“He that would govern others must

first master himself”

 Self is that inner force, common to all human
beings and yet unique in each, which is the
deep source of growth.
 The Material Self
All the tangibles and physical elements that
reflects who we are ,such people are greed
for money, tendency to become rich quickly
even if it involves a lot of risk. It also involves
the desire to live in luxurious houses,
wearing highly expensive clothes and jewelry
and driving flashy cars.
 which is reflected through our interactions
with others.
 Example: Social networking
which consists of all our internal thoughts
beliefs and morality. Its a way to put a label
on how we see ourselves.
Example: Religious practices. Of course there
are some of us who went to Mosques,
churches, Hindu temple etc . A lot of this
background stuff in your head will dictate
what you think of as being “spiritual.”
Self-Concept
– Self-concept is the image you have of who you are.
– the totality of a complex, organized, and dynamic
system of learned beliefs, attitudes and opinions
that each person holds to be true about his or her
personal existence
– It is your subjective description of who you think
you are.
– Self concept can be viewed as the labels we
consistently use to describe ourselves to others.
We learn who we are through four basic
means,
1. Our interactions with other individuals
2. Our association with groups
3. Roles we assume and
4. Our own labels.
• Our Self is reflected in our Attitudes
which is learned predisposition to respond
to a person, object or idea in a favorable or
unfavorable way.
• In our Beliefs
the ways in which we structure our
understanding of reality
• and in our values which are enduring
concepts of good and bad right and wrong.
10
1. The Open Self represents all the information,
behaviors, attitudes, feeling, desires, motivations
and ideas that you and others know.
Communication depends on the degree to which
you open yourself to others and to yourself.
2. The blind Self represents all the things about
yourself that others know but of which you
are ignorant.
3.The hidden self: information known only to
self; and
4.The unknown self: information known to
neither self nor others.
Self-awareness refers to the conscious understanding of your
thoughts, feelings, actions and interpersonal connections.

Self awareness is a way for us to explore our individual

personalities, value systems, beliefs.
