Compare Between Voltaic Cell and Electrolytic Cell

Voltaic cell Electrolytic cell

Anode Cathode

Zinc, Zn
Anode Cathode
Copper, Cu
Copper, Cu

 Copper(II)sulphate,
solution
Copper(II) sulphate,
solution
 1. Chemical energy electrical energy  1. Electrical energy chemical energy
2. Negative terminal (anode) positive terminal 2. Anode is connected to the positive terminal
(cathode) of the battery and cathode is connected to
3. Pairs of metals are of different types the battery’s negative terminal
4. Blue colour of copper(II) sulphate, solution 3. Pairs of metals are the same type
becomes paler 4. Blue colour of copper(II) sulphate, solution
does not change.

Voltaic cell  Oxidation process:
Half equation: Zn +2
Reduction process:
Anode Cathode
Half equation: +2 Cu

Zinc, Zn Copper, Cu Obeservation:

• The colour of the solution is changes from blue become
paler and then turn to colourless.
• The intensity of blue solution is decrease, the
 Copper(II)sulphate,
solution concentration of copper(II) ions decrease.
• Electrode anode: Zinc metal is become Thinner, mass of
zinc decrease.
• Electrode cathode: Brown solid is deposited, copper metal
become thicker, mass of copper electrode increase.
Electrolytic cell

Oxidation process:
Half equation: Cu +2
Reduction process:
Half equation: +2 Cu
Anode
Copper, Cu Obeservation:
• The colour of the solution remain unchanged.

Copper(II)sulphate, • Electrode anode: The electrode become thinner. This is

solution because copper anode ionizes to form copper(II) ions, .
Copper dissolves to become copper(II) ions, .

• Electrode cathode: The electrode become thicker. This is

because copper cathode, copper(II) ions, are discharged to
form copper atoms, Cu . Then, solid copper is deposited
