BRAKES

LO : The learner will be able to describe the purpose of a brake, different types
of brakes , and operating principles of brake different types of brakes as
well as the advantages and disadvantages of these brakes .

ITEMOHELENG CAMPUS
INTRODUCTION.

 A brake is a device operated by electromagnetic, hydraulic, air pressure or

mechanical means and they all have same operating principle.
 It uses friction between the brake drums and the brake shoes, both of which are
lined with an asbestos material.
 The asbestos material is able to withstand the heat and dragging effect that develop
as a result of the rubbing action between the shoes and the drum.

ITEMOHELENG CAMPUS
THE PURPOSE OF A BRAKE ON A VEHICLE OR MACHINE.

It applies friction to a moving surface in order to:

 Stop the vehicle or machine within a certain distance or time period.

 Stop the vehicle or machine in emergencies .
 keep the vehicle or machine stationary on a slope.
 Slow the speed of the vehicle or machine down.

ITEMOHELENG CAMPUS
ELECTROMAGNETIC BRAKE OPERATING PRINCIPLES.
 This type of brake if commonly used in overhead crane with a electric motor which drives the
hoisting drum.
 It is fitted with two sets of spiral springs to push the shoes against the shaft so that it cannot
turn.
 When electric current flows , the electromagnetic solenoid pulls in lever A & B.
 These levers push back the springs and the brake pads open so that shaft can turn
 When the electric current stops flowing ,the solenoid looses the magnetic force.
 The springs then pull the brake shoes back against the shaft.
 This type of brake operates automatically when the power fails.

ITEMOHELENG CAMPUS
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF ELECTROMAGNETIC BRAKE.

ADVANTAGES . DISADVANTAGES
 It depends on the flow of electric current to
 The system provide safe working conditions operate.

 It is a fast response system  The system is infective during power failure

ITEMOHELENG CAMPUS
HYDRAULIC BRAKE OPERATING PRINCIPLES.

 Hydraulic braking system provide balanced braking action.

 This system uses fluid to transmit the braking efforts.
 The pressure in a hydraulic system is distributed in all directions equally.

ITEMOHELENG CAMPUS
ACTIVATING AND DE-ACTIVATING HYDRAULIC BRAKE.

 The system consists of fluid reservoir, a master cylinder, a wheel-brake mechanism,

rigid and flexible pipes and pipe junctions.
 Fluid reservoir is connected to the master cylinder.
 When the brake pedal is depressed or lever it forces the piston into the master cylinder.
 As the piston moves past the bypass port, it traps the fluid in the cylinder and causes
rapid increase in pressure o the fluid.
 The fluid in the cylinder is forced through the pipes to the operating cylinder in the
wheel-brake mechanism or shoe expander mechanism and the brake is applied.
 When the brake pedal or lever is released, the piston spring forces the piston out of the
mater cylinder.
 This relieves the pressure on the pressure on the fluid, and the brake released.

ITEMOHELENG CAMPUS
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF HYDRAULIC BRAKE SYSTEM.

ADVANTAGES . DISADVANTAGES
 The split system provides improved  Air in the system will make the brake feel
safety spongy.

 It provides a powerful braking action.  Fluid leaks in the system can cause failure.
 The system does not have cables or rods
that can stretch or break.
