SHIPP ELEMENTS

Bow
A bow is the front most part of a ship which cuts the
water along its sides as the ship proceeds. The key
two requirement for a bow is to have; minimum drag
possible or so called resistance between the water
and the ships hull and must be tall enough to avoid
water splashing to easily on top of it. In all the
different bow types tested so far in the history only a
handful of them pass the test of time; bulbous bow,
Inverted
Forward
Toward the stem. Between the stem
and amidships. toward the direction
of the bow. Aft on a ship means
toward the direction of the stern.
Port: Port refers to the left side of
the ship, when facing forward.
Starboard: Starboard refers to the
right side of the ship, when
Hatch cover

Hatch covers are used to cover

and protect the cargo in the
cargo spaces. Hatch covers close
off the hatch opening
Hatch coaming
Raised rim of vertical plating around a
hatchway to prevent entrance of water, the
upper edge of which forms a sealing
surface with the hatch-lid or cover. any
vertical surface on a ship designed to
deflect or prevent entry of water. It usually
consists of a raised section of deck plating
around an opening, such as a hatch.
Coamings also provide a frame onto
which to fit a hatch cover.
Hold
That part of a ship where cargo or supplies are
carried.) Cargo in holds may be either packaged in
crates, bales, etc., or unpackaged (bulk cargo).
Access to holds is by a large hatch at the top. ...
Holds in older ships were below the or lop deck,
the lower part of the interior of a ship's hull,
especially when considered as storage space, as for
cargo.
Tween Deck
(The space between any continuous decks) In
a ship, the tween deck actually means an empty
space separating or between (tween) two
other decks in the hull of a vessel. ... Flush Deck:
The deck that extends without any constructional
breaks from the frontal part of the ship to the aft is
referred to as the flush deck.
Hatch Release
Bobby Hatch
A raised framework with a sliding cover over a
small hatch on a ship.
Hatch Entrance
An opening in the deck of a ship or in the floor or
roof of a building.
Mast Hause
A small deckhouse built around a mast to serve as
a support for derricks or sometimes as a winch
platform and used for housing.
Austra Lian Laddar
That the vertical ladder inside a cargo hold shall
be 20 feet or less and be equipped with a
horizontal platform when it is necessary for
stevedores to enter holds to carry out loading or
discharging operations.
Companion Way
:-  is a raised and windowed hatchway in the ship's
deck, with a ladder leading below and the hooded
entrance-hatch to the main cabins.
Emergency Escape
in a structure is a special exit for emergencies such
as a fire the combined use of regular and special
exits allows for faster evacuation,
Cat Walk
A narrow walkway (as along a bridge
Hydraulic Store
Bosun store
A small compartment in which tools and small
stuff for repairing cargo gear are kept.
Fore Peak Store
The section of a ship's hold that is within the angle
made by the bow, used for trimming or for storage
of cargo.
Bow Store
Fore Peak tank
The extreme forward lower compartment
or tank usually used for trimming or storage in a
ship.
Anchor Station
Bullous Bow
Is a protruding bulb at the bow (or front) of a ship
just below the waterline. The bulb modifies the
way the water flows around the hull, reducing
drag and thus increasing speed, range, fuel
efficiency, and stability.
Crow Nest
Is a structure in the upper part of the main mast of
a ship or a structure that is used as a lookout point.
This position ensured the best view for lookouts to
spot approaching hazards, other ships, or land.
Bul wark
Extension of the hull of aship above the deck line,
used for protection from heavy waves and from
gunfire. It is also long used metaphorically for
defensive walls on land.
Hand Rails
A solidly built railing which is mounted
conveniently alongside passageways offering the
seaman a secure handhold while moving about
the ship.
Scupper
An opening cut through the bulwarks of a ship so
that water falling on deck may flow overboard
Gang way
Narrow passage that joins the quarterdeck to the
forecastle of a sailing ship. The term is also
extended to mean the narrow passages used to
board or disembark ships. Modern
shipping uses gangways to embark and
disembark passengers.
Pilot ladder
A highly specialized form of rope ladder, typically
used on board cargo vessels for the purposes of
embarking and disembarking pilots. The design
and construction of the ladders is tightly specified
by international regulation under the SOLAS
regime.
Fuel Oil tan
An oil fuel tank that contains only the required
quality of fuel ready for immediate use. Two oil
fuel service tanks, for each type of fuel used on
board, necessary for propulsion and generator
systems, are to be provided.
Double Bottom Tank
Is fitted between the forward collision bulkhead
and the after peak bulkhead. Its top or `inner
bottom' forms the deck of the cargo holds and
continues out to the ship's side so that the turn of
the bilge can be protected.
Side Tank
These are tanks of triangular configuration fitted at
both shoulders/wings of the cargo holds. Their
purpose is to carry ballast water. Topside tanks
consist of a `transverse ring' made from frames in
the transverse direction
Saddle Tank
A small steam locomotive with a water tank that
fits over the top and sides of the boiler like a
saddle.
Over flow slupper
Vant Door
Tank Top

These are tanks of triangular configuration fitted at

both shoulders/wings of the cargo holds. Their
purpose is to carry ballast water. Topside tanks
consist of a `transverse ring' made from frames in
the transverse direction.
Folding Hatch
Covers for general cargo / multi-purpose
vessels. ... Folding hatch covers are designed to
carry various deck cargoes and to form functional
cargo areas to facilitate flexible cargo operations.
Portable Pontoon
A flat-bottomed boat (such as a lighter) especially :
a flat-bottomed boat orportable float used in
building a floating temporary bridge. 2 : a float
especially of a seaplane. pontoon.
