Ships Particular Terms
• A ship class is a group of ships of a similar design.
This is distinct from a ship type, which might reflect a
similarity of tonnage or intended use. For example,
USS Carl Vinson is a nuclear aircraft carrier
(ship type) of the Nimitz class (ship class)
• . Laying the keel or laying down is the formal
recognition of the start of a ship's construction. It is
often marked with a ceremony attended by
dignitaries from the shipbuilding company and the
ultimate owners of the ship.
• MMSI Overview. Maritime Mobile Service Identities
(MMSIs) are nine digit numbers used by maritime
digital selective calling (DSC), automatic identification
systems (AIS) and certain other equipment to uniquely
identify a ship or a coast radio station.13 July 2018
• A Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI) is a series
of nine digits which are sent in digital form over a
radio frequency channel in order to uniquely
identify ship station, ship earth stations, coast
stations, coast earth stations, and group calls.
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) number is a unique
reference for ships, registered ship owners and management
companies. ... They consist of the three letters "IMO" followed by
unique seven-digit numbers, assigned under the International
Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS).

A Call Sign is a unique alphanumeric identity that belongs to

the vessel and acts in the same way as the registration number of a
car. The Call Sign enables two vessels with the same vessel name to
be identified separately. The Call Sign is also useful when the
actual vessel name is difficult to understand.
Gross Registered Tonnage (GRT) is the volume
of space within the hull and enclosed space
above the deck of a merchant ship which are
available for cargo, stores, fuel, passengers and
crew. Description: Gross Registered Tonnages
are actually measurements of cubic capacity.-
• Moulded Depth. Moulded depth is the vertical
distance measured from the top of the keel to the
top of the freeboard deck beam at side. In wood and
composite ships, the distance is measured from the
lower edge of the keel rabbet.
• Moulded breadth is the maximum breadth of
the ship measured amidships to the moulded line of
the frame in a ship with a metal shell and to the
outer surface of the hull in a ship with a shell of any
other material.12
• The fresh water load line is an amount equal to milli
metres above the summer load line where is the
displacement in tonnes at the summer load draft and
T is the tonnes per centimetre immersion at that
draft.
• The summer freeboard is the distance from the
water line to the tonnage deck or main deck of a
vessel, when the vessel is loaded up to
the summer mark of the load line
• . Deadweight tonnage (also known as
deadweight; abbreviated
to DWT, D.W.T., d.w.t., or dwt) or tons
deadweight (TDW) is a measure of how much
weight a ship can carry, not its weight, empty
or in any degree of load. DWT is the sum of
the weights of cargo, fuel, fresh water, ballast
water, provisions, passengers, and crew.
