Asphalt is a heavy, dark brown to black mineral

substance, one of several mixtures of hydrocarbons
called bitumens.
Asphalt is one of the world's oldest engineering
materials, having been used since the beginning of
civilization.
Most of the petroleum asphalt produced today is
used for highway surfacing.  Asphalt paving material
is a dull black mixture of asphalt cement, sand, and
crushed rock.

The raw material used in modern asphalt manufacturing

is petroleum, which is a naturally occurring liquid
bitumen.

 Asphalt is a natural constituent of petroleum, and there

are crude oils which are almost entirely asphalt. Oil wells
supply the crude petroleum to the oil refineries, where it
is separated into its various components or fractions.

Various components of the road

1.Sub-grade:

This is the natural surface of the road (60cm). Subgrade is

the foundation of the road, thus it’s the lowest and most
important component of road structure.

Material should be:

Strong enough
Easily accessible in the surrounding vicinity
Cheap

Function of Sub grade:

Bears all the load thus acts as a foundation of road

Transfer load through grain to grain contact

2. Sub-base:

But this is not the important part of the road.

Consists of:
Upper Base Course
Sub or Lower Base Course
 
Material:
Should be better than the material of Sub Grade
The Upper Base Course is made up of sand, gravel, and stone
The Lower Base Course is made up of cheaply available material ex:
rock and stone fragments

3.Base:

This is the important part of the road. Due to quality of material

used in the road base it is divided into:
UpperRoadBase
LowerRoadBase

Material:
In case of Upper Road Base the material is of high quality as the
load intensity is high
In case of Lower Road Base the material is of high quality as the
load intensity decreases

4.Surfacing:

It is the upper most layer of road cross section. It can

be provided in one or two layers.

Material:
Made up of bituminous material
For Flexible Pavement asphalt concrete is used
For Rigid Pavements Reinforced Cement Concrete
(RCC) is used
