The teachers are entering the
classroom with inadequate
resources because of the
following reasons:

● teaching location
● lack of funding,
● and other unexpected
circumstances.
Can you effectively teach
without a lot of resources?
What are some tips for
teaching English with limited
resources?
►Incorporate realia into your lessons.
►Use the free and readily-available materials
you already have around you to inspire
your lesson plans.

Loneliness

Elgie A. Mifranum
Loneliness
- is an unpleasant emotional
response to perceived isolation.

- is defined by researchers as
feeling lonely more than once a
week.
Causes of
Loneliness

- lack of support
- divorce/ separation
- death of someone significant
- isolation (physical, social, emotional)
- stress
- moving to a new location.
Studies have found this effect can be
especially strong for students or teachers
from countries in Asia with a collective culture,
when they come to study or work at
universities in more individualist English
speaking countries.
Researchers have suggested that because
teachers encounter many potentially isolating
experiences, they appear to have a relatively high
susceptibility to developing perceptions of
loneliness and stress.
Loneliness, according to many experts, is not
necessarily about being alone. Instead, if you feel
alone and isolated, then that is how loneliness
plays into your state of mind.
According to research by Segrin and Passalacqua (2010)
that assessed the mediational relationship between
loneliness, stress, social support, and health behaviors,
loneliness is highly correlated with perceived stress and is
indirectly related to negative health behaviors due to its
association with higher levels of perceived stress.
Moreover, loneliness has been found to negatively impact
career outcomes as well.
In a study examining how the quality of work
relationships influences organizational commitment and
satisfaction with life, Yilmaz (2008) found that employees
who perceived their relationships with colleagues as
being inadequate reported less satisfaction with life
and lower levels of organizational commitment.
The great part about teaching English as a
second language is that there is lots of
opportunity to meet other adventurous
individuals doing the same thing.
Language Barrier

LORETO, ANGELICA P.
Language is needed for any kind of
communication, even people with speech
impairments communicate with sign language and
brail.

Language barriers are the most common

communication barriers which cause
misunderstandings and misinterpretations
between people.
● Difference in Language
Causes of ● Regional Accents, Dialects and Pidgin
Language ● No Clear Speech
Barriers ● Use of Jargons and Slang
● Word Choice
● Literacy and Linguistic Ability
1. Use plain language.
Overcoming
2. Find a reliable translation service.
Language 3. Enlist interpreters.
Barriers 4. Provide classes for your employees.
5. Use visual methods of communication.
6. Use repetition.
7. Be respectful.
OLanguage barriers can be a challenge, but working
with people of different cultures and backgrounds is
what drives innovation, creativity, and success. Don’t let
language barriers stand in the way of embracing
everything a diverse workplace has to offer.

Reasons and Solutions

1.THE CLASS SIZE

CHALLENGE
Differentiation solutions for navigating large classes:

1. Transform whole class instruction into small

learning teams.
Examples: jigsaw groups, small group mini-lessons, centers and stations, clock
partners

2. Use a variety of structured dialogue

protocols to focus learning experiences.
Examples: affinity mapping, chalk talk, socratic seminars
2. THE WORKLOAD
CHALLENGE
Differentiation solutions that address this issue:

•Learning Profile Cards:

Get to know all students from their perspective. Use these cards to
thoughtfully create teams based on more than behavior.

•Learning preferences through art

•Norms
•I Wish My Teacher Knew: The approach presented in this book
empowers students to share about themselves in a private way.

3. THE TIME CHALLENGE

We should look at how we can create

learning experiences within the time frame
that place students in the role of active
learners instead of passive receptors.
Differentiation solutions:

1. Focus students on deeper learning.

Plan what students need to
know, understand, and do. or KUD (to borrow a term from Carol
Ann Tomlinson).

Example:
quick journal write-up or partner talk. Or use the protocols shared above.
2. Plan from the learner’s
perspective.
