What is motivation in second-language
learning?

The desire to learn is often related to

the concept of ‘motivation’.
Motivation is the process that
initiates, guides, and maintains goal-
oriented behaviors. It is what causes
you to act, whether it is getting a
glass of water to reduce thirst or
reading a book to gain knowledge.
Motivation has a significant role in
the process of language learning. It is
important to understand
its theoretical evolution in this field
to be able to consider its relevance
in the learning and teaching of a
foreign language.
Motivation is the most used concept for
explaining the failure or success of a language
learner. Second language (L2) refers to a
language an individual learns that is not his/her
mother tongue, but is of use in the area of the
individual. It is not the same as a foreign
language, which is a language learned that is
not generally spoken in the individual's area. In
research on motivation, it is considered to be an
internal process that gives behavior energy,
direction and persistence in research (in other
words, it gives behavior strength, purpose, and
sustainability). Learning a new language takes
time and dedication. Once you do, being fluent
in a second language offers numerous benefits
and opportunities. Learning a second language
is exciting and beneficial at all ages. It offers
practical, intellectual and many aspirational
benefits. In learning a language, there can be
one or more goals – such as mastery of the
language or communicative competence – that
vary from person to person.

Conclusion

Motivation has a key role in the development of

language skills. Teachers can play a significant role in
motivating learners to the learning of a
second/foreign language. Motivation is an important
factor in learning a foreign language. Here, not only
the effort of the teacher is important, but also the
dedication of the students. Only by working together,
by common efforts, you can achieve the desired
results. As future teachers, we will strive to motivate
and encourage our students to achieve their goals.
