THE ANGLO-SAXONS INTRODUCTION • Romans left Britain in about 410 CE.
• They went back to Italy to defend parts of RoMAN
Empire near to Rome.
• The British people didn’t have enough Roman army
to defend them from the invaders. • It did not take long for new tribes to attack Britain.
• These tribes were known as Anglo-Saxons.
WHO WERE THE ANGLO-SAXONS? • Mix tribes from northern Germany, Denmark & the Netherlands.
• They came to Britain in large rowing boats.
• After the Romans left Britain, the Anglo-Saxons
arrived. • Some Anglo-Saxons started a peaceful life.
• But most of them fought with the British (Britons) for
the land.
• When the Anglo-Saxons captured the land, they
brought their families from their homeland. • 3 main tribes from northern Europe: -the Angles -the Saxons -the Juts
• Angles and Saxons were the largest tribes, so they
were called the Anglo-Saxons. • Anglo-Saxons raided the coast Britain in 360 CE, even before the Romans left completely.
• Anglo-Saxons attached villages and Roman villas.
• They tried to steal gold, jewellery and animals.
• When the Romans left Britian for good, the Anglo- Saxons not only raided Britain, but also settled in Britain too.
• Anglo-Saxons were fierce warriors.
• They were armed with:
- A battle-axe - A sword - A spear - Round shield - Wore metal helmet - Body armour called chain mail CHAIN MAIL
The Anglo Saxons did not
conquer Scotland, Wales or Cornwall. Why? WHY DID THE ANGLO-SAXONS DECIDE TO SETTLE?
• 2 reasons: -they wanted to find new farmland and the climate was better in Britain.
-their homeland often flooded, it was difficult to grow
crops. • Picts and Scots from the north attached the British.
• Other British tribes asked help from Anglo-Saxons to
protect their homes and farms against the Picts and Scots. • So, the Anglo-Saxons settled in Britain instead of leaving. WHERE DID THE ANGLO-SAXONS SETTLE? • There were many battles between Anglo-Saxons and Britain.
• Over time, the Anglo-Saxons took control of most of
Britain. • Some of the Britons who were defeated in battle became the slaves of the Anglo-Saxons.
• Some of the Anglo-Saxons and Britons lived happily
