Portfolio Vs Program

1.Program: is a group of related projects managed in a

coordinated way to obtain benefits and control not available from
managing them individually. A project may or may not be part of a
program but a program will always have projects.

2.Portfolio: is a collection of projects or programs and other

work that are grouped together to facilitate effective management
of that work to meet strategic business objectives.

3. A program manager provides leadership and direction for

the project managers. Program managers are responsible for more
than the delivery of Project results.

(Project Management Office) PMO
•PMO: A body responsible for centralized and coordinated
management of projects is its domain.

•PMO Function:

1. Managing shared resources across all projects.

2. Identifying / developing project management methodology,
best practices, and standards.
3. Coaching, mentoring, training and oversight.

WBS-(Work Breakdown Structure)

• WBS organizes the team’s work into manageable sections. The

PMBOK defines the work breakdown structure as a “deliverable
oriented hierarchical decomposition of the work to be executed by
the project team”.

•Advantages of Creating WBS of a Project:

1. Assignment of responsibilities to the project team.

2. Indicates the project milestones and control points.
3. Helps to estimate the cost, time and risk.
4. Project scope is graphically expressed so that all the
stakeholders can have a better understanding.

Work Package

A work package is just a collection of activities and tasks that fit

together logically and could be “ring fenced” to assign to a
responsible person.

Work packages are the lowest level of the WBS and are pieces of
work. This is also the level at which the project manager has to
monitor all project work.

Keys to Project Success

1.Take the time to create a WBS. It’s the key to understanding the
project, setting and maintaining the scope.

2.Schedule, risks, costs: all can be deduced from the WBS.

3.All tasks are potential risks.

4.Control the scope or it will control your.
