Organizations using functional structures group jobs based on

similarity in functions

Suitability: It is most suitable when the size of

the organization is small, has a diversified

activities and operations require a high degree

of specialization and offers a limited line of

products.

 Efficient use of resources
 Optimum utilization of manpower
 Increases managerial efficiency
 Eliminates duplication of efforts
 Promotes control and coordination within a department
Disadvantages
 Difficult to get quick decision
 Harder to determine accountability /responsibility
 May lead to conflicts
 Coordination problem
Delay in decision making
b. Divisional Departmentalization
 In organizations using divisional structures,
departments represent the unique products, services,
customers, or geographic locations the company is
serving.
 Thus each unique product or service the company is
producing will have its own department.

Territorial /geographical departmentalization
Territorial Organization is especially attractive to large scale
organization or rather enterprises whose activities are
physically or geographically dispersed. All the activities of
given area of operation are grouped into zone ,division
,branches
This structure is most often used in sales & in production
COORDINATION
Types of Coordination

1. Internal Coordination
2. External Coordination
1. Internal Coordination:

It is the establishment of relationship of among

managers, executives, divisions, subdivisions, and

other workers. This type of coordination happens

within the organization


Types of Internal Coordination

a) Horizontal coordination:
Horizontal Coordination refers between the persons of
the same status. Coordination between the departmental
heads, supervisors, co-workers
b) Vertical coordination:
Superior coordinates his work with his subordinates and
vice versa. Sales manager coordinates his work with the
activities of the sales supervisor.
Vertical co-ordination on the other hand demands the
symmetrical action of people at various levels for
accomplishing enterprise objectives through the linkage of
individual contributions to the total performance.

2. External coordination:
It is the establishment of relationship of the
