CULTURE
The Maltese language has
developed over time and is a
unique language which is
considered and recognised
as an official language.

The Maltese language is

Semitic. (meaning coming
from Arabic, but with time
other influences from
English and Italian)

Language
Customs and
Traditions
There are various typical
Maltese traditions which
are still existing nowadays.
Unfortunately, some
traditions have disappeared
with time. Some examples
are clothing, typical Maltese
food, feasts, games and
crafts.
Customs and
Traditions
The Catholic church affects the
Maltese traditions. Religion has a
lot of influence on the Maltese
culture.

Many feasts that are celebrated

revolve around the beliefs of the
Catholic church such as Christmas,
Easter, Imnarja, village feasts as well
as other celebrations like baptism,
Holy Communion and marriage.
Examples of Traditions in
Malta
In Malta, we celebrate both religious and
traditional feasts; like Carnival. The village
feasts are related to the religious aspect. Every
town and village in Malta has a patron saint.
Some old games like playing with marbles,
beads, hopscotch as well as wooden toys
when computers and electronics were non-
existent.
Clothing was quite different. The males used to
wear a shirt and trousers rolled up to their
knees, a sash on their waist and a cap. The
ladies used to wear long skirts, a shirt and a
veil on their head. Many used to wear the
għonnella.
Technology
Technology means the methods used to do the
work have become easier.

Nowadays, production methods have changed

because manual work has been replaced by
machines.
For example, before, flour was made using
a windmill or else with the help of animals.
Farmers used to work in the fields with
their bare hands. However, nowadays, all
this is done with the help of machines.
Religion and Beliefs
Religion is a set of beliefs,
which gives an answer to
various questions that we
might have in life such as
death and suffering.
Religion is considered as a
sacred, spiritual and divine
thing.

Religion joins people
together and therefore,
gives them a sense of
community.

Multiculturalism
The definition of
multicultural is something
that incorporates
ideas, beliefs or people from
different countries and
cultural backgrounds.
Multiculturalism describes a society that deals with
different cultures. Members of often very different
cultures can coexist peacefully
Multiculturalism is the way in which a society deals
with cultural diversity
society as a whole benefits from increased diversity.
Multicultural societies are
characterized by people of
different races, ethnicities, and
nationalities living together in
the same community.
In multicultural communities,
people retain, pass down,
celebrate, and share their
unique cultural ways of life,
languages, art, traditions, and
behaviours.
Diversity occurs when
people of different races,
nationalities, religions,
ethnicities, and philosophies
come together to form a
community.
A truly diverse society is one that
recognizes and values the cultural
differences in its people.
Today, entire countries, workplaces, and
schools are increasingly made up of
various cultural, racial, and ethnic
groups.
By recognizing and learning
about these various group,
communities build trust, respect,
and understanding across all
cultures.
Communities and
organizations in
all settings benefit
from the different
backgrounds,
skills, experiences
and new ways of
thinking that come
with cultural
diversity.
When people of different
cultures come together to
celebrate and share their
different.
A multi ethnic society has many
advantages.
It allows people to experience
different ways of life for example
learning about other languages,
traditions and behaviors.
