Objectives

• Define Literature Review

• Determine its objectives
• Be familiar with the 5 steps in writing the literature
review
Literature Review
• Is a comprehensive summary of a previous
research.

What does it survey?

• Scholarly articles, books, journals, studies and

other sources relevant to your research.
Reminder
• Selected literatures should give
and establish a theoretical
bases for the research which
justifies the need to conduct
the research.
Why?
• Because there is an existing need, an
existing problem, and there is a gap to
be filled up .

… and the solution is to go through the

research or the study.
In a nutshell…
A literature review is …
• Is a selection of studies, research, journals that
have been published, defended or proven that
will serve as basis or foundation of your
research that justifies there is a need to
conduct the research.
Literature Review in 5 Steps

1. Search for a literature relevant to your study

Open scholarly Use
Develop a
database Boolean Identify the
Develop a list of
(Google most
list of synonyms operators
scholar, important
keywords for these (And, or,
PubMed, publication
keywords Science Direct) not etc.)
WHAT IS BOOLEAN OPERATORS?

Boolean Operators are simple words (And, Or, Not or

And Not) used as conjunctions to combine or exclude
keywords in a search, resulting in more focused and
productive results.
This should save time and effort by eliminating
inappropriate hits that must be scanned before
discarding.
2. Evaluate and Select Source

 Do not read the full research ( read the abstract

instead)
 Look at the bibliography of the publication for the
relevant sources

 Observe the number of high citation count

3. Identify themes, debates and gaps

 Take note of the connections of different sources to

easily organize your literature review
Observe for the :
 Trends and patterns
 Themes
 Debates and contradictions
 Influential studies
 Gaps
4. Organizing by Outlining

 Chronological (from older to recent publication)

 Thematic (Organized around several key themes)
 Methodological (Compare the different research
methods being used across studies)
 Theoretical (Use to discuss opposing theories or
models)
5. Start writing the Literature Review

 Introduction (Cite and present the study)

 Main Body (Summarizes and synthesizes the sources
to your study)
 Conclusion (restate the main argument . It reminds
the reader of the strength or your main argument(s)
and reiterates the most important evidence
supporting those argument(s).
