What is Swelling
When a fibre absorbs water, they change in
dimension(length, width). The
dimensionally changes that takes place due
absorbing of water or moisture by any fibre
is called ‘swelling’. It may occure length-
wise or width-wise.
Different types of Swelling
Transverse diameter swelling
Transverse area swelling
Axial swelling
Volume swelling
Importance of Swelling

o Improve the absorption capability of dyes in addition to chemicals.


o It has technical consequences inwards the dimensional stability of the
fabric, the predominant transverse swelling measurement.
o Due to swelling the pores of interlaced construction volition live blocked,
this sentiment is used to produced shower proof fabric.
o Improve fastness of dyed materials.
