What is Reading Comprehension?
• Understanding a reading text means extracting the required
information from it as efficiently as possible.
For example:
• We apply different reading strategies when looking at a notice
board to see if there is an advertisement for a particular type of
flat. etc.

Reading Comprehension- HAND OUT 1
Through Reading Comprehension Passages (RCP) with Q&A
test, the examiner test not only your English Language skills
but he also evaluates your knowledge of vocabulary, logical
understanding of ideas and your skill of connecting the split
ideas expressed in the Reading Comprehension passage but
also accuracy and flow of thought in deriving the inferences,
which is further checked through the Reading Comprehension
with Questions and Answers.

Reading Comprehension
• Prior to attempting the comprehension questions, a student has to
understand and grasp the meaning of the passage or article. The
ability to perceive or understand and realize the content identifying
the essential points in the passage is reflected, and evaluated from
the student’s written response.
• It is therefore, important for students to read the passage critically
and draw the overall idea(s) carefully and then attempt the answers
to the questions. Therefore, the passage or article has to be read at
least twice, understood in totality and the questions answered
completely.

Skills Required to Answering Questions of the Passage

• Have good vocabulary and ability to know and understand the meaning of
words of the passage and their relevance to the context
• Understand the content and theme of the ‘Reading Comprehension Passage’,
its organization, identification of antecedents and references
• Be able to draw inferences from the passage about its contents and pick up
the Central Idea (Main Thought) of the passage
• Understand the questions based on the passage and recognize, the ‘Tone,
Situations, Mood, Purpose of the Passage
• Give complete answer to the question and ensure grammatically error free
response
