Internet Overview
Terminology

Important concepts

06/12/21 SWCOEH Spring 2000 5

What is the Internet?

The Internet is a collection of high-speed

networks comprised of the material
backbone network provided by the
National Science Foundation and a
hierarchy of tens of thousands of
computers attached to government
agency, school, commercial and corporate
networks.

Myths, Misunderstandings and
Misconceptions

 The Internet and the World Wide Web are

the same thing.
 The Internet only contains text and
graphical information.
 “On the Internet” vs. “Via the Internet”
 All search engines are the same.
 If I use several Internet search utilities,
then I have searched everything.

06/12/21 SWCOEH Spring 2000 7

More Myths, Misunderstandings and
Misconceptions

 If you don’t find in on the WWW, it doesn’t

exist online.
 “Information on the Internet is free” vs.
“You get what you pay for”
 Information on the Internet is true and
accurate.
 Searching is easy.

06/12/21 SWCOEH Spring 2000 8

06/12/21 SWCOEH Spring 2000 43

Search Engines

06/12/21 SWCOEH Spring 2000 44

How Search Engines Work

Automatically index web pages. How?

 “Spider” visits the site, reads it, follows
links
 Text of page goes into a database
 You put in a term, search engine searches
for your request in the database
 Returns the results, including some site
text, ranked by some relevancy formula

Problems for Search Engines

 Web is not static

– Freshness (how often a site is crawled)
– Dead links
 Many different information formats
 Studies show search engines are
– incomplete
– little duplication
– not keeping up with growth of the web
– search features are inconsistent

06/12/21 SWCOEH Spring 2000 48

FAST http://www.alltheweb.com
 One of the largest indexes
 Designed to demonstrate
technology, not a major search portal
 Offers standard search capabilities
 Allows searching by language
 Can limit searches to page title or URL
text

06/12/21 SWCOEH Spring 2000 49

AltaVista - http://www.altavista.com
 Major all-purpose search engine
 The results four different sources
– Ask Jeeves
– RealNames
– AltaVista's web crawler, one page per web site
appears in the top results.
– Open Directory

06/12/21 SWCOEH Spring 2000 50

AltaVista - http://www.altavista.com
 Three buttons under listing
– "Translate"
– "More pages from this site"
– "Company factsheet"
 Other types of searches
– Advanced Search
– Images, Audio & Video
– News
– Discussions newsgroups
– Shopping

06/12/21 SWCOEH Spring 2000 51

Northern Light - http://northernlight.com/

 Appeals to professional searcher and

corporate market
 “Special Collection” of print materials for
fee
 Results organized in “files”
 Good for subject searching

06/12/21 SWCOEH Spring 2000 53

Google http://www.google.com
 Large database (usually in the top 3)

 Uses link popularity to rank results

 Store copy of pages; can browse if site is

not available

 “I’m feeling lucky” button

06/12/21 SWCOEH Spring 2000 54

Search Engines Don’t Include
 Adobe PDF and other formatted files
 CGI output such as data requested by a form
 Commercial resources with domain limitations
 Pages excluded by robots. txt files
 Pages Accessible Only Through a Search Form
 Password Protected Pages (some are paid
subscribers but others are free to registered
users)

06/12/21 SWCOEH Spring 2000 55

Advanced Searching
 Boolean operators (AND/OR/NOT)
 Symbols (+, -)
 Truncation (wildcards)
 Case sensitivity
 Symbols and numbers
 Weight/proximity of search terms
 Specified date range
 Language(s)

06/12/21 SWCOEH Spring 2000 56

Simple Operators
 + indicates word must be on the page
– +asbestos +awareness +training

 - prohibits word
– +mustang -ford

 “xx” indicates word sequence

– “indoor air pollution”

06/12/21 SWCOEH Spring 2000 57

Boolean Operators
 AND, OR, and NOT
 Use when searching for more than one
concept or search statement
 Can be used in most computerized
databases

06/12/21 SWCOEH Spring 2000 58

AND - narrows search
Search for pages with cats and dogs

both
Pages with “cats” Pages with
“cats” and “dogs”
“dogs”

06/12/21 SWCOEH Spring 2000 59

OR - broadens search
Search for pages with cats or dogs

both
“cats”
Pages with Pages with
and
“cats” “dogs”
“dogs”

06/12/21 SWCOEH Spring 2000 60

NOT - eliminates (narrows)
Search for pages with cats but not dogs

both
Pages with “cats”
Pages with
“cats” and
“dogs”
“dogs”

06/12/21 SWCOEH Spring 2000 61

Truncation
 Uses a symbol (usually a *) as a substitute
for zero or more characters
– For example, risk* retrieves risk, risks, risk-
taking
– Use of the term infection* would not get
infection control because there is a space
after the word infection

06/12/21 SWCOEH Spring 2000 62

Phrase Searching
 Use quotation marks to insure that phrase
is recognized
– “indoor air pollution”
– “carbon monoxide”

06/12/21 SWCOEH Spring 2000 63

Search Engine Advice
 Not all the same. Strengths and weakness
cancel out
 Little overlap between search engines
 Suggest getting familiar with three
 Learn a few advanced strategies for each (i.e.,
Boolean, +, -, “ ”, case sensitivity)
 In general, you are searching “anywords” not
keywords or subjects
 Use synonyms

06/12/21 SWCOEH Spring 2000 64

Search Engine Summary
 Advantage
– Large content database
 Disadvantage
– Indexing not precise
– Finding relevant documents difficult
 Best use
– Searching for unique terms with specific
meaning

06/12/21 SWCOEH Spring 2000 65

To follow search engines:
 Search Engine Watch
– http://www.searchenginewatch.com/

– ProFusion http://www.profusion.com/
 Helps address lack of overlap between index
databases

06/12/21 SWCOEH Spring 2000 73

MetaSearcher Limitations
 Subject to “time outs”

 Only retrieve 10-50 from each search engine

 May not include all important search utilities

 Advanced searching not available

06/12/21 SWCOEH Spring 2000 74

Metasearcher Summary
 Advantage

 Specilized Utilites
– search phone numbers, e-mail addresses,
listservs, government information, etc.

06/12/21 SWCOEH Spring 2000 76

Steps to Smarter Searching

06/12/21 SWCOEH Spring 2000 77

Effective Search Strategies
 URL "guessing”

 Use a subject directory

 Use search engines

06/12/21 SWCOEH Spring 2000 78

Smart Search Step 1

Go to the source site (if you know it or can

guess it) to find:
 current news  scientific reports
 product information  staff directories
 public relations  library catalogs
materials  article reprints
 press releases

Use the site’s search feature if it has one!!

06/12/21 SWCOEH Spring 2000 79

URL Guessing

1. Leave off http://

2. Start with www.
3. Add name (sometimes shortened)
4. Add domain .com, .edu, . org, or .gov

06/12/21 SWCOEH Spring 2000 80

Guess the URL’s for:

 Internal Revenue Service

www.irs.gov
 University of California, Los Angeles
www.ucla.edu
 American Society of Mechanical
Engineers
www.asme.org

06/12/21 SWCOEH Spring 2000 81

Smart Search Step 2

 Use a Subject Directory

– company
– product name
– broad topics
– current events
 Good place to find “jump lists”
 Won’t find “buried pages”

06/12/21 SWCOEH Spring 2000 82

Smart Search Step 3
Use Search Engines
– for very specific searches
– pages buried in a site
– unusual keywords, combining keywords
– chemical and drug names
– unique product names
– CAS numbers
– geographic locations
– people’s names

06/12/21 SWCOEH Spring 2000 83
