Route Planning PE
 Conduct terrain analysis as part of your route planning
 Use METT-TC to analyze the effects of terrain and weather
on your mission
 Consider terrain when determining distance and direction
(dead reckoning) to navigate points along your route
 Identify and select terrain features in association with both
the map and ground to navigate
 Identify prominent landmarks or unique features that are
clearly visible for steering marks
 Identify handrails, catching features, and navigational
attack points
 Identify key terrain and existing obstacles along the route
 Identify mounted and dismounted avenues of approach
along the route

Practical Exercise (Cont’d)


 Situation: Your platoon has been instructed to link-up with
another platoon to retrieve physical intelligence material
and bring it back to the S2. Your current location is at grid
coordinate EG 76158262. The link-up point is at a small
cemetery at grid coordinate EG 83008680. Your platoon
must remain undetected and cannot travel on roads. The
enemy force is primarily to the north
 Instructions: Plan your route to the link-up point, and BPT
brief the class using the map on the next slide

Lesson Assessment
 Situation: Your platoon has been instructed to link-up with
another platoon to retrieve physical intelligence material
and bring back to the S2. After making contact with the
other platoon and retrieving the intelligence material, plan
different route to a patrol base. Your current location is at
the small cemetery at grid coordinate EG 83008680.
 Instructions: Plan your route to a new patrol base at grid
coordinate EG 78008200 and brief the class using the map
on the next slide. Your platoon must remain undetected,
cannot travel on roads, or take the same route as before.
